🔬 Thrilled to share the latest breakthrough from Ju Lab at the University of Sydney! Our latest study, led by first author Yunduo Charles Zhao, introduces a Vein-Chip platform for modeling cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). 🧠With a focus on COVID-19 vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, the Vein-Chips replicate CVST vascular anatomy and hemodynamic profiles. 💉These personalized Vein-Chips, drew inspiration from the traditional Chinese movable type methodology, developed through a cost-effective technique, allow in-vitro thrombosis assays, revealing distinct scenarios between normal and dysfunctional endothelial conditions. 🙌🏻The findings promise improved CVST management and prevention. 🤩Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to impactful studies like this under the guidance of A/Prof Lining Arnold Ju. Hence, a trainee with average beginner skills but with exceptional consistency of efforts is better off in the long run compared to a trainee with exceptional beginner skills but with average consistency of efforts. Congratulations to our PhD supervisor of the year 🎉 According to tradition, our PhD students kicked off 2024 by awarding the JCD Prize to a supervisor, who has gone above and beyond in the past year. This year, the prize went to professor Stine Korreman from the Dept. of Clinical Medicine 👏 According to her PhD students, Stine is great at creating a safe and supportive work environment where everyone feels valued as researchers, individuals and as members of a larger community. "It's about seeing the whole person in each PhD student and each PhD student as part of a bigger whole. That may sound trite, but I can get annoyed at the tendency in the world of research to create this ideal archetype of researchers as total nerds who forget everything around them, including eating, and who have no life other than what goes on in the lab," says the JCD Prize winner, and continues: "Being nominated for an award like this actually means a lot more to a supervisor than students might realise. There are so many areas in the world of research where we measure quantity - how many articles we publish, how many citations we get, and how many lectures or conferences we attend. But supervision is an area where we rarely know whether we are doing something that actually makes a difference to students. I like how Elena Hoffer, PhD interpreted the graph image below. Being a subject matter expert does not mean a lot to people unless they learn what they can do with an expert of your caliber and type. In other words, degrees and experience “do not speak for themselves.” Those are just requirements and preferences; they get you to the door (the hiring manager or interview). It is still up to you as a subject matter expert to sell the benefits of your knowledge and the skills you have acquired through the journey. Remember this tip for your next interview!
