Seminar: Strategic Career Planning in Science What do I need to know if I want to plan my career in science? Does a doctorate / PhD make sense in my field, even if I don't intend to go into research? What comes after the doctorate? What job opportunities are available to me? What are the paths I can follow and where do I get orientation? Your take-aways A clear vision of the possibilities inside and outside academia, experiences from a doctor in chemistry, a guideline for the steps to take in order to reach your goals. About the format The purpose of a seminar on Alumniportal Deutschland is to introduce a topic or give an overview/update on a topic. Attendees can expect a presentation or lecture by an expert of the field followed by a Q&A session. The presentation might be recorded and sent afterward to all registered members together with the slides or other seminar documents via email. Academic advisors or professors who have taught you in relevant courses: Professors who have taught you in biology-related courses can attest to your academic abilities, research potential, and overall performance in their class. 2. Research supervisors: If you have worked on research projects as an undergraduate, your research supervisor(s) can provide insights into your research potential, work ethic, and intellectual curiosity. 3. Professional contacts If you have worked in a relevant industry or organization, a supervisor or colleague can attest to your work experience, skills, and how your experience relates to your academic pursuits. Example; As a Graduate of Biology you worked in a Biological or Pharmaceutical Firm, your supervisor here can write your LoR. 4. Volunteer or community service coordinators: If you have volunteered in a biology-related capacity, the coordinator or supervisor of the organization can speak to your dedication to the field and the skills you have acquired from your volunteer work. 5. Co-authors If you have co-authored research papers or publications with other researchers or academics, they can write a letter of reference highlighting your research skills and contributions to the field. 6. Graduate students or postdoctoral researchers If you have worked with graduate students or postdoctoral researchers in a research lab or as part of a research project, they can speak to your research potential, work ethic, and intellectual curiosity. 7. Employers If you have work experience in a relevant field, your employer can attest to your work experience, skills, and how your experience relates to your academic pursuits. 8. Professional associations or organizations If you are a member of a relevant professional association or organization, a member or leader of the association can write a letter of reference speaking to your dedication to the field, involvement in the community, and potential for future contributions. It's important to remember that when choosing individuals to write letters of reference, you should select those who can provide specific examples of your skills, accomplishments, and qualifications for the PhD program. "When I reflect on my career, I credit my mentors, collaborators, and trainees for much of my success. My time in the Wold and Reichardt labs imparted on me not only my love of science, but examples of how to run collegial, high-achieving, fun lab groups, and I have strived to do the same ever since. I have emphasised the importance to collaborate. Bringing researchers together who have different expertise and backgrounds creates a rich, fun environment and is a more effective way to do science. I also learned during my years as a trainee that science is very hard, and that if your projects are ambitious, many if not most will fail. As Lou told me a while back, batting 1 out of 3 in baseball is considered a great feat. Good ideas can come from well-researched experimental plans, but they can also come from something as vague as an informed intuition. So it is crucial at times to trust your training and knowledge, and to take a leap as Bertrand did. In addition, although it is important to have bold ideas, it is equally imperative to know when to let go of the ones that aren’t working out." Recently, I had the honour of speaking at Loral International Schools' career day for high school students. The school invites leaders from various fields to help students make informed decisions about their career paths. Crafting my message was challenging because my entrepreneurial journey has diverged significantly from traditional pharmaceutical practice. When I inquired about the principal's expectations, she said, "Tell them what they need to do to make money." This response brought me relief, as it acknowledged a critical reality: financial success is not solely determined by traditional professional courses like Medicine, Pharmacy, or Law. Instead, it is influenced by a variety of factors. During my discussion with the students, I discovered that their common goal, regardless of career aspirations, was financial success. Here is the summary of my speech: 1. **Embrace Technological Advancements**:Understand the future of technology and its transformative potential. Acquire skills that will make you relevant and indispensable in your chosen field. 2. **Leverage Technology:** Ensure you know how to integrate technology into your industry to gain a competitive edge. My concluding advice to the students was: You may not end up in your desired career, but whatever you find yourself doing, whether or not you have a passion for it, do it with excellence.
