#Inno4Vac 2024 Annual Meeting: Accelerating Vaccine Innovation!💥🤝From 8-11 October, Inno4Vac held its 3rd Annual Meeting in Heidelberg, Germany, bringing together roughly 90 participants. Discussions focused on the latest advances in #vaccine development, including AI-based vaccine efficacy models, human infection models, 3D mucosa models, and vaccine bio-manufacturing. Scientists The National Institutes of Health did not receive $710 million in royalty payments from #COVID #vaccines - the public did! That is good! Lost in the political nonsense about the distribution of royalties paid to the NIH related to inventions underlying COVID vaccines is the fact that the public sector received $710 million through licensing of inventions made with public support. Our research identified $17.2 billion in federal funding for research on ten vaccine technologies that were available to companies at the onset of the pandemic and were immediately put to the test by more than 150 different development efforts. https://lnkd.in/ezPh6e8W Of this amount, only 9.4% involved National Institutes of Health (NIH): Intramural Research Program (IRP); 8.8% represented investigator-initiated research at academic institutions, 22.7% represented program project or center grants to support programs outside of the NIH, and 44% represented Cooperate Agreements involving multiple institutions. The $710 million return through the NIH Technology Transfer represents part of the public sector's return on this investment in addition to returns to academic institutions that received federal support for research leading to inventions that were developed in COVID vaccines. ⚠️ ISV Committee Update ⚠️ The International Society for Vaccines - ISV has several committees with different focus, such as outreach and public engagement, mentorship, collaboration and partnerships, awards and prizes, and finance and governance. The overall aim is to promote knowledge exchange, engage with the public to explain the basic tenets and importance of vaccines, connect scientists across the broad disciplines of vaccine sciences and importantly support the next generation of vaccine scientists. #Vaccines play a crucial role in saving lives worldwide. Some of the most effective vaccines are inaccessible due to the need for a cold chain. In a recent "Viewpoint" from Science Translational Medicine, experts advocate for investing in thermostable vaccines to overcome this challenge. The authors state: "Enhancing vaccine thermostability would have transformative effects on global health and should be considered an essential objective for future vaccine development." At the Access to Advanced Health Institute (AAHI), we echo this sentiment. We have been at the forefront, developing key thermostable vaccines for #tuberculosis and #COVID-19.
