Today is #WorldAllergyDay, a time to raise awareness around allergic diseases and asthma. While allergies and #HereditaryAngioedema (#HAE) are both known for causing swelling, they are not the same. Likewise, the medicines that treat allergic reactions are not effective in treating an HAE attack. #HAE is a bradykinin-mediated disease. Our aim is to bring better oral options—like #deucrictibant, a highly potent, specific, and orally bioavailable competitive antagonist of the bradykinin B2 receptor—to meet the needs of people with HAE for on-demand and prophylactic treatment. Learn more about our mission to help people with HAE live normal lives through pioneering science: https://lnkd.in/egs5p4dn

Did you know cockroaches contain proteins that can trigger allergic reactions in humans? Not only that, but cockroach allergens can exacerbate asthma symptoms, sometimes severely. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, children can be at a higher risk of developing asthma thanks to ongoing exposure to cockroach allergens. A policy of prevention and avoidance is critical, but as anyone who’s ever tried will tell you, cockroaches are tough to get rid of. The best bet is to get your children tested for sensitivity to cockroach allergens, especially if they have asthma, so that you can diminish the impact with treatment. This week I learned I’ve been lying to doctors (inadvertently) for more than 50 years. What gives? Well, as a child, I was diagnosed with an allergy to penicillin. I had strep throat, doctors gave me penicillin and my body erupted in hives. Easy diagnosis, right? Not so much. Turns out that more than 90% of people who THINK they are allergic to penicillin, are not. There are lots of other reasons you can break out in hives. A post-viral infection is the number 1 cause. Anyway, I read the 90% stat in an article in the New York Times and talked to my doctor about it. She told me it would be a good idea to get myself tested — before I actually needed an emergency dose of penicillin. I did the test this week. It was boring and time-consuming. An allergist had to scratch my arm with some penicillin. And then when I didn’t get any swelling after 15 minutes, he gave me an oral dose of the drug, and kept me in a small windowless room for 90 minutes. I was fine. Not allergic. Now I am free to take penicillin anytime I need it. If you’ve ever been told that you’re allergic to penicillin, please consider getting yourself tested. No one WANTS to take antibiotics. But if you need them, then penicillin is an inexpensive and very effective drug. ✍️ How do you look after your health? ♻️ Please share if you think this post might help others.
