Over the years I’ve had so many conversations with other gas engineers discussing which checks and tests are “mandatory” whilst working in a customer’s property. We all know which tests must be done and then there are some checks which may be seen as being best practice only. My advice has always been along the lines of: ‘it’ might not be mandatory, but if it only takes an extra few minutes why wouldn’t you do it for peace of mind? I recently had the daunting task of providing technical assistance during a police interview with a gas engineer that was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter after attending a property where the occupant was later found deceased. I feel that the incident is a prime example of where an extra 1 minute check could have not only saved lives, but also could have saved significant trauma for everyone involved. The vast majority of gas engineers work safely but things can and do go wrong after a job is finished. In my experience, I’m not sure if enough gas engineers recognise the importance of recording their job details and measurements as well as completing documentation accurately in order to address concerns if their work is ever brought into question.

Trafford College Trainer/Assessor/Verifier. Trustee of Fletcher Moss Rangers FC and Retired Chair of AGSM North West
Too many employers expect engineers to be “quantity” rather than “quality”. Giving operatives more jobs than are reasonably expected to complete. Usually over a geographical area that doesn’t include travelling time to each job. In many cases managed by supervisors who have no experience, expertise or knowledge of the gas industry. With work planners who can’t see that while their engineers are “marching, they are not fighting”. The IEGM unsafe situation always puts the onus on the engineers but the company is IMO culpable of creating the problem.

Ultimately, safety through compliance and meeting standards is not just a regulatory obligation but a moral imperative.
Certificate of Compliance for Gas A Certificate of Compliance (CoC) is required for all new gas installations and should be issued by a registered gas Practitioner. When selling or renting a property, a valid gas compliance certificate is required. Regular Inspections and Maintenance: Gas installations should undergo regular inspections and maintenance to identify and rectify potential issues before they become safety hazards. Regular servicing of gas appliances by qualified technicians is essential. #SafetyFirst#Compliance#Accountability.

❌ Sadly with so many unregistered and unqualified gas and heating 'engineers' choosing the right company can be tricky. As a Gas Safe registered engineer and business, I understand the importance of having the right type of qualifications and training ✅✅✅ Being Gas Safe registered means the following for us: ↪️ A seal of approval for our customers ↪️ Recognised nationwide ↪️ Our proof that we are legally qualified to carry out any gas related work. If a price you've been quoted a price that seems to good to be true, always check the engineers credentials. As a legal requirement all gas businesses must be on the Gas Safe Register 🔥🏢 #gassafe #gasengineer #gassafety #heatingengineer
