The guest for this episode is Mr. Garrick Poon 潘國偉, Chief Training Director at My Dog Fits Dog Training Academy and he is one of the few Hong Kong residents with international guide dog trainer qualifications. Garrick has 13 years of experience training pets and guide dogs, and has studied at the Victoria Guide Dog Association in Australia and The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in the UK. His expertise in training guide dogs using positive reinforcement methods is truly exceptional. Not only has Garrick trained internationally qualified guide dogs, but he also matches visually impaired individuals with suitable guide dogs. He is often invited to serve as a dog and guide dog information lecturer at commercial and educational institutions. He has even acted as a dog training and action consultant on the major Hong Kong dog-related films, including "Little Q", a true story about a guide dog and her guidance and another film about stray dogs that will released soon. This episode dives into the world of guide dogs, filled with love and courage. These wonderful creatures are more than just adorable pets, they are the eyes and faithful companions of the visually impaired. September is Guide Dog Awareness Month and I encourage you to check out the podcast linked below where three guide dog handlers share their experiences with guide dog access. I can tell you the facts: 1- That guide dogs are highly trained animals that make a meaningful difference in their handler's life. 2- That there are laws in EVERY province that make it illegal to deny a guide dog and by extension their handler access to a public space. 3- That despite these laws guide dogs and their handlers are denied access regularly to restaurants, stores, cabs and car shares. What the facts don't tell you is how distressing, disappointing and disruptive being refused access is to the daily lives of guide dog handlers across Canada.
