CoreCHI™ Certified Arabic Interpreter/Hub-CMI Certified/ Interpretation Trainer/ Localization Specialist
Advance Directive/Durable Power of Attorney: How can we interpret them? Many novice interpreters experience a difficulty interpreting those two terms, for they are not quite common in our Arab world. Put simply, they both refer to a type of document through which someone authorizes others to take medical/financial decisions on their behalf in case thery were not able to. Here are some suggested interpretations for both of them: Advance Directive: توكيل/توجيه مسبق بالرعاية الطبية Durable Power of Attorney: وكالة قانونية غير قابلة للإلغاء.

Thank you The Piddington Society for trusting me to lead this very important conversation on how to better work with interpreters to ensure equitable access to justice for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Some key takeaways from yesterday's session: 🔹provide appropriate working conditions for interpreters such as a dedicated space in the courtroom where the interpreter can see and hear all parties in the room and store their belongings such as dictionaries; 🔹provide adequate briefing for interpreters and sufficient time for them to prepare before the hearing commences - this allows the interpreter to brush up on any technical vocabulary that is likely to come up; 🔹being mindful that interpreting is not a mechanical exercise and there will be some words that cannot be translated directly; 🔹being mindful of cultural nuances and that the client may have different attitudes towards the justice system based on their experience in their home country; 🔹use plain English, avoid negative questions, and use one idea in one sentence; 🔹encourage your client to speak up if they feel they were misinterpreted. I strongly encourage everyone to read the Recommended National Standards for Working with Interpreters in Courts and Tribunals published by the Judicial Council on Cultural Diversity: https://lnkd.in/g6C2UCGC
“Sometimes the interpreter is the hardest person working in the room.” Thanks to everyone who joined us for our session on working with interpreters today. Chaired by Alex Zhang with speakers Senior Member Michelle Evans-Bonner, Max Beckerling and Kym Song. They covered official guidance on using interpreters, obligations facing interpreters and lawyers, advice on making the engagement smoother and what information interpreters need from lawyers, courts and tribunals to help them do their job.

Choosing the right interpreter for courtroom settings is crucial, especially in Thailand, where not all interpreters, even those trained by government agencies, meet the stringent requirements of legal proceedings. Employers must ensure interpreters are certified, background-checked, and specifically trained in legal terminology to avoid issues that could compromise the integrity of the case. Here's how to navigate this process effectively. #LegalInterpreting #CourtroomInterpreting #InterpreterCertification #Thailand Read More:
