Guinness Six Nations Lifts 2024 Draught Beer & Cider Sales Pre-tournament favourites, France and Ireland, kicked off the 2024 Guinness Six Nations in some style – with Ireland claiming a historic win. In other games, England achieved the narrowest of wins against Italy. And Scotland, having romped to a 27 point lead, survived an incredible 26 point second half Welsh comeback by a solitary point. Off the pitch, draught beer and cider sales were -7.3% over the Friday to Sunday vs. 2023, although this comparison isn’t strictly fair as we see games on Friday & Saturday in 2024 vs. Saturday & Sunday in 2023. The positive news is that the weekend drove +6.6% increase in sales vs. the other weekends in 2024 so far. Turning to category performance, the big winners over the weekend were the more traditional winter drinks (Stout & Ale). Stout is the biggest winner and is driving category growth +7.5%. 2024 also sees the Premiumisation trend continuing unabated with World Lager overtaking Core Lage as the bigger category. The biggest categories to lose out are Premium Lager -15.1% and Core Lager -13.8%. Average consumer dwell time grew at a total level to 134 mins vs. 131 mins in the same week last year (+2.3%) with City Centres driving the highest growth +2.3%. With all locations benefitting from an increased consumer visit length vs. 2023, with Suburbia outlets +1.5% whilst Rural saw a marginal increase +0.8%. Meanwhile, footfall is declining in line with volume -3.3% vs. 2023 driven by a strong decline on Saturday. Suburbia was worst affected with poor weather & the cost of living keeping consumers at home. City Centres were also badly affected by the ongoing rail strikes. Sunday continues to see increases across the board as we see consumers looking to go out, particularly for food as there’s no rugby to enjoy. Read More:

Shout out to the great work done by Jeff Blunden and the team at Golf Business Advisory Services in releasing their recent report - Governance Standards in Australian Golf Clubs. This made me pause, reflect and write my thoughts in this blog post on the progress we have made at Lonsdale Links in improving our governance capability in recent years. https://lnkd.in/gwwCpvu8

"That problem's on the other side," said the operator when I was asking about a concern that was a big more "F&B" than "Golf." I paused, curious. "Which side signs your paycheck?" I asked. While I am not sure they completely understood my rhetorical question, it was still a fair one. Golf/F&B. Sales/Operations. Grounds/Golf. Are there areas of concentration? Of course. But wouldn't you agree that having "sides" should never be aspirational. Golf provides our restaurants 25,000... 35,000 (or more) walk-by guests every year. Every restaurant guest is a potential event host, bride-to-be, or meeting planner. And that wedding guest or restaurant diner could be deciding to take a lesson or learn golf TODAY. Where should they go? Like our bodily systems are largely symbiotic and intertwined, so are our golf course's systems. One can either strengthen the other, or begin to kill it. #clubs #countryclubs #golf #golfindustry #golfconsulting

Through the Rock Bottom Promotional Pricing assignment, I've learned how strategic promotional pricing can attract more customers and boost sales, even if it means sacrificing some profit in the short term. Rock Bottom Golf offers significant discounts during some holidays like Father’s Day. They give $100 off on select golf clubs, which are already competitively priced. This creates a sense of urgency and excitement around customers, encouraging them to purchase quickly to take advantage of the deal. Additionally, I get to learn how to calculate margins and how they affect the company. The difference between the selling price and the cost of goods sold (COGS) is the margin. The margin that Rock Bottom Golf has on a driver is $180 before the special discount. But the margin is only $80 when the $100 discount is applied. This explains how the promotion takes $100 out of each driver's profit. My understanding of how companies can use promotions to balance drawing in customers with maintaining profitability has grown a lot from learning how to do this pricing assignment. #PromotionalPricing #SalesStrategy #CustomerAttraction #ProfitMargins #BYUH Kate Grow (Bailey) Irish Wolfe

Choosing between golf initiatives and F&B is like choosing between tires and fuel for your vehicle. It's not really a choice. While there is no more meaningful dollar for a private club or public course than a golf/membership dollar, there are other "contribution dollars" that can be nearly as impactful. Merchandise sales can account for as little as 5% of total revenue, but those dollars are generally much higher margin than food, and can help carry December (if you're up North). F&B dollars can be narrower in margin (especially food) but help make the golf dollar possible with member dining and other on-course outlets. Plus, not all of your diners golf - but all of your golfers eat! A coordinated strategy of all your channels - golf/membership, events, F&B, merchandise (and more) is always the right gameplan. #golf #golfindustry #clubs #countryclubs #golfmarketing #hospitality #golfsolutions #compass360
