Is philanthropy evolving to create greater impact through collaboration and systems thinking? We caught up with Mr. Benedict Cheong, Chief Systems Integration Officer at Temasek Trust, to explore how these principles are reshaping sustainable development. Mr. Cheong shared insights into how Asian philanthropy has shifted towards outcomes-based giving, with a focus on measurable impact. Systems thinking can be the natural next iteration. Using education as an example, he explained how systems thinking connects individual interventions – such as teacher training, curriculum development, and policy advocacy – into a cohesive strategy for long-term success. By addressing the root causes of complex issues and fostering collaboration across sectors, this approach amplifies collective impact for communities worldwide. Watch the full video below to discover why systems thinking is crucial for transforming philanthropy in Asia and driving sustainable, large-scale change. 🌏💡 The Philanthropy Asia Alliance is a Temasek Trust initiative to drive collaborative philanthropy. Today, I had the pleasure of speaking at #EuroPhilantopics2024, organised by @Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association, on the topic of philanthropy co-investing in EU financial instruments. I discussed the European Commission's flagship Global Gateway initiatives, including the Global Green Bond Initiative and the Green Coupon Subsidy Facility, and how they can support achieving and generating positive social and environmental impact. As we move forward in our discussions on global decarbonisation, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, it's crucial that we explore ways to build synergies to work hand-in-hand with philanthropists. I believe that events like #EuroPhilantopics2024 are essential in driving this conversation forward. I'd like to extend my gratitude to my fellow panellists Siep Wijsenbeek from @FIN, Daniela Stefanova from @European Investment Fund (EIF), Gunter Fischer from @European Investment Bank (EIB), and Daniël Brink from the @Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Hanna Hanses and Hanna Surmatz from @Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association for their insights and for organising a wonderful event. Let's continue our conversation on how philanthropists can engage with the EU for a positive impact! #philanthropy #coinvesting #EUfinancialinstruments #GlobalGateway #sustainability #decarbonisation"

Along the #OurCommonFuture Summit during #UNGA, the OECD - OCDE Network of Foundations Working for Development (#netFWD) and WINGS have issued a statement on the role of philanthropy in global development. At Co-Impact, we are proud to join 24 other leading foundations and philanthropy networks in supporting a vision to: - Amplify voices from locally-rooted partners by increasing resources to low-income countries, focusing on women, youth, and grassroots organizations. - Strengthen cross-sector partnerships and protect civic space to boost development effectiveness. - Maximise philanthropy’s unique strengths through innovative financing, such as flexible grants and blended finance, while ensuring transparency, accountability, and alignment with local needs. In a panel discussion to launch this call to action, Denis Mizne (Fundação Lemann), C.D. Glin (PepsiCo Foundation), Naghma Mulla (EdelGive Foundation) Laura Fernandez Lord (Fundación Microfinanzas BBVA), and Bathylle Missika (OECD) emphasized that philanthropy must go beyond “cutting cheques,” instead creating an environment that shifts power to local players and builds trust with partners. Denis Mizne highlighted the power of collaboration between international and local philanthropy, citing our work together at Co-Impact as a key example 🙌🏽 Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eWFQWnJg

🌍 While #trust-based philanthropy has gained traction in the West since 2019, it remains largely overlooked in Asia. What might be the reason? In our joint publication with McKinsey & Company, “Examining Trust and Measurement in Asian Philanthropy”, we dive into the unique dynamics of trust in philanthropy across the Asian landscape. One potential reason for this is that many Asian foundations have long embraced a more collaborative approach between funders and grantees. The report highlights that “trust” in the context of philanthropy can be framed beyond the traditional funder-grantee relationship in Asia: 1. Adopt a relational approach → Asian philanthropists often prefer to partner with organisations they know personally or those connected to key stakeholders. This preference fosters a more engaged and effective partnership. 2. Trust in collaborative processes → Many Asian funders acknowledge the limits of their expertise and actively seek to co-create interventions and approaches to measure impact with various partners, rather than just provide unrestricted funds. 3. Build trust through transparency → Trust is cultivated through transparency. In Asia, foundations are increasingly sharing data and insights to enhance accountability and mitigate reputational risks. The broader expectation for transparency influences both grantmaking and impact measurement practices. Eager to learn more?
