Guidance: facilitating outdoor learning activity and off-site visits. Many activities can be used to achieve a variety of different outcomes. “The primary purpose of an outdoor learning activity or off-site visit is often one or more of the following” states the OEAP NG document 4.2f Facilitating Learning and Development. They are listed as being:- • recreation (fun, enjoyment, physical exercise) • education (knowledge, understanding and skills) • development (attitudes, behaviours, social skills) • therapy (personal change, reducing dysfunctional behaviour). For most establishments, the purpose of most activities is education and development, although some activities are also used for recreation (for example ‘after hours’ during a residential visit). Outdoor education guidance - the basics of good practice. "Good practice does not guarantee safety or success, but it does make them more likely." “Good practice, in terms of what happens on any particular visit can be quite subjective, because it depends so much on the aims and the context” begins the OEAP NG guidance document 4.3a Good Practice Basics. However, by looking at how outdoor learning and off-site visits are planned, managed and supervised, it is easier to identify what good practice looks like. “Good practice is fundamentally about getting the right leaders doing the right activities with the right participants in the right places at the right times.” Have straightforward and practical employer and establishment policies, focused on enabling safe, high quality learning, says the valuable free to download, print and use PDF guidance document. Such policies should encourage all staff to engage with outdoor learning and off-site visits and include standard operating procedures to facilitate regular activities and visits happening as a matter of routine. “Ensure that effective systems are in place, with competent people in key roles, so that outdoor learning and off-site visits are managed effectively and without unnecessary red tape.” The document cross-references with a number of other useful OEAP NG documents that will also prove to be invaluable – in particular for assistant leaders, EVCs, heads and managers, outdoor education advisers and visit leaders. #oeapng #outdooreducation https://lnkd.in/gRm5Bk4T

This consistent encouragement and recognition of progress help to build self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment, gradually replacing fear with excitement and enthusiasm. Moreover, the one-on-one setting allows for open communication and trust-building between the instructor and student. Children feel comfortable expressing their concerns and asking questions, fostering a supportive relationship that further enhances their confidence in the water.

The benefits of specialist training, resources and guidance. “In the ever-changing world of school trips, here’s how can you keep up-to-date with the latest advice and guidance” began a recent article on the Teachwire website. It introduces the Outdoor Education Advisers’ Panel (OEAP) as “the lead body for guidance, advice and training related to outdoor learning and educational visits in England and Wales.” Teachwire is the publisher of the Teach Primary and Teach Secondary magazine. It also provides thousands of free resources, exclusive teaching packs and subject specific CPD plus advice for teachers. The report by Thomas Booth, who is an Education Visits Advisor (EVA) employed by Rochdale Borough Council, centres on the fact that the OEAP is an unparalleled source for three vitally important aspects of learning outside the classroom expertise, namely with:- 1) Resources 2) Specialist training 3) Guidance. “The OEAP’s national guidance is referenced in DfE guidance and is also supported by Welsh government and the Health and Safety Executive.” #oeapng #outdooreducation Teachwire https://lnkd.in/ecCM3_s8
