Portugal controlled 70% possession but lacked any real creativity in their play. There were very few off-the-ball runs, making their approach predictable and easy to defend. The midfield struggled to get involved—Bruno Fernandes only seemed active during set-pieces, and Palhinha went missing for most of the game. Despite having five times as many final third entries as Scotland, Portugal couldn't break through. They had 7 box entries from the left, 16 from the right, and just 3 through the middle, which shows how limited their attacking options were. Out of 36 crosses (11 from the left, 25 from the right), only 5 found a target. Scotland did an excellent job crowding the penalty area and neutralizing Portugal’s efforts. If Portugal wants to break down compact defenses like this in the future, they’ll need to rethink their approach and inject more creativity and off-the-ball movement into their game. #FootballAnalysis #UefaNationsleague

Athletic Club de Bilbao was always amusing me with their strategy to raise/sign and play with only regional players. So behind this statistics they are not only having 100% national players but 100% from the Basque region. Isn’t that sensational in modern football in globalization age? And that’s not only just a strategy for a decent club. No, they win trophies - the latest is this season’s Copa Del Ray with surpassing grands like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, - and provide the world with such stars like “Pichichi”, Andoni Zubizarreta, Bixente Lizarazu, Javi Martinez, Fernando Llorente, Aymeric Laport, Iker Muniain, Williams brothers and many many others. For many years we discussed this approach to be taken as a benchmark for my native club Alania Vladikavkaz where the small region is rich for talents for the main team and other clubs in premier division and could give more with a better planned long term strategy. We even started talks to partner with “big Busque brother” and organise the experience exchange and observation programs before the club faced financial difficulties. So I had my eyes on Athletic Club from early 2000s. This approach is also helpful to promote the club in the region. If you are basque you will feel the same connection with the team as if it is a national team. If you are not - you will be supporting club full of players fighting for their city and region and not only the money. Old school football for those who are missing it much. But the same time it’s a huge work that deserves standing applause. To have success with this strategy you need to organise scouting and academy working on the highest possible level; your transfers should be sharp and verified as the market for you is hundred times less comparing to competitors.
