Need more proof that New York has taken center stage in the world of digital health? Look no further than the latest report from Silicon Valley Bank, as covered by Gabriel Perna in Modern Healthcare. Here’s what you need to know: ☑ The epicenter of digital health has shifted from the West to East Coast. New York companies received $2.3B in venture-backed health tech investments in the first eight months of 2024, compared to $2.1B earned by Silicon Valley firms. Among New York’s biggest deals is Maven Clinic, which raised a $125M Series F earlier this month. ☑ $100M+ mega deals are leveling off. They represented 34% of dollars raised in the first eight months of this year and in 2023. In 2021 and 2022 they were a much larger piece of the pie.  ☑ AI-focused deals are on the upswing. As you might’ve heard at the Digital Health New York Summit in September, everyone’s thinking about the nuances of AI—and investors poured 44% of their total dollars into companies focused on the technology so far this year.  ☑ Companies focused on provider operations are a growing point of interest in the M&A space. 💡 2024 Digital Health funding in the US 📰 The yearly Rock Health report on US digital health funding is out. It describes a David and Goliath scenario where early-stage startup activity needs to cope with massive moves led by large healthcare players. Key data and trends for last year: 📊 US Digital funding ends up at $10.1Bn (-6.5%) and 497 deals (-1.2%). Adjusted from inflation, the value is similar to pre-COVID 2019 funding levels. 🔬 This can be explained by a focus on earlier-stage dealmaking and a relatively smaller deal size for more advanced (Series C/D) funding 🎯 Increasing concentration of capital around investor heavyweights 🤖 AI-enabled digital health start-ups represent 37% of the total funding of the year. Foundation models are mainly build by Tech Giants rather than startups. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 The healthcare industry is grappling with a surge of digital health solutions, often leading to a "pilot graveyard" where promising innovations fail to scale up. A recent article by Healthcare Innovation explores the challenges of scaling up healthcare innovation and offers strategies for success, which we found interesting. One key challenge many healthcare startups face is the abundance of niche solutions backed by private equity, creating a tempting but risky landscape for health systems. As Chad Jones, senior vice president of information systems at Baylor Scott & White Health, puts it: "Billions of dollars of private equity money has been put to work on extremely niche micro solutions. They have flooded the zone." This influx makes it difficult to discern truly viable solutions from short-lived trends. Another hurdle is the lack of robust organizational structures and processes to support innovation. Amy Goad, managing director at Sendero Consulting, emphasizes the importance of strong project management and governance structures to prioritize and evaluate projects effectively. Even with solid governance, healthcare's complex stakeholder landscape poses challenges. Goad notes, "Even with a great governance structure, there are still going to be negotiations and issues to work through to appease everyone who is a rightful stakeholder." Both Jones and Goad underscore the importance of clearly defined objectives, robust evaluation processes, and the willingness to abandon pilots that fail to meet expectations. The new CB Insights Digital Health report is out. Here is a short summary: 1️⃣ #Europe is falling behind with the lowest deal share in past years of only 17%, compared to 61% of the #USA. 2️⃣ #Angel and #Corporate investing fell to a low of 6% and 13% respectively. We don’t expect corporate investment to pick up in the short term. They might better focus on creating strategic advantages and acquisitions. Good investors go anti-cyclical - so this could be a good time for Angels to be more active. 3️⃣ The number of #earlystage #funding has been down, from a stable 65% to 51% of total deals, for the first time since 2020. In Europe the share went from 74% down to 66%. 4️⃣ The time of #Unicorns is over and flat since 2022. There has been no new HealthTech unicorn this year. 5️⃣ The vast majority of exits remain M&A - making it almost the only realistic #exit scenario. Let's take those global numbers with caution. In the past #Switzerland has been more resilient, also in startup investments and especially in the #Healthcare industry, one of the backbones of the country. https://lnkd.in/e37r8Usc
