A sailing story that explains the power of happiness in business. There is a regatta in Brazil called Refeno. It’s 300nm and runs from Recife to the island of Fernando de Noronha. And for a regular sailboat takes around two days. The boat in this video is called Ave Rara, and its fastest time was just over 22 hours. Ave Rara raced over 16 years and won in its category 15 times. But that’s not what is impressive. 4 times - Ave Rara won the Fita Azul: The first boat to cross the finish line. When Ave Rara won the fita azul it was racing against boats worth $1-5 million. Made of carbon. Ave rara at the time was worth $40k and made of wood. HOW WAS THIS POSSIBLE? The mission of Ave Rara was never money. Or fame. Or the actual award. It was always about seeing just what is possible. And the crew feeling a part of that mission. It was about a shared purpose. Feeling valued. Feeling connection and belonging. Belief. This then created passion, resilience and determination. THIS is what it means to be happy at work. And when employees are happy, the results are extraordinary. More cohesion. More ideas. More profit. But the order is important. The focus needs to be people first. Then profit follows. The other way around just won’t work. THIS was the first story I told yesterday when on the stage in Belo Horizonte at AmCham’s CEO Forum. Thank you for the invite. It was an honour. #AmChamBrasil #AmChamBH #ReturnOnHumanity #ROH #Happiness Amcham-Brasil
