After watching Upgraded, a movie where a new hire at a prestigious NYC auction gallery is sent off to London to pursue a high-stakes deal, it’s easy to buy into the glamorized view of the industry. The film paints a picture of first-class travels, posh gatherings, and million-dollar sales made easy. But is it really that glamorous? Day-to-day, auction work is rooted in intense research, meticulous cataloging, accurate condition reports, customer care, and the physical demands of handling valuable and extremely fragile objects. Preparing for an auction means managing a mountain of logistics, from ensuring accurate provenance records to arranging complex shipments. Even on auction day, while the energy is high, the focus for staff is on tracking bids, managing unplanned issues, and ensuring every detail goes according to plan. So while the allure of jet-setting to close deals is an exciting notion, the truth is much more about dedication and precision than glamour. Auction gallery work is rewarding, but it’s defined far more by grit than glitz and the job is rarely as smooth as it appears on the screen. #UpgradedMovie #AuctionGallery #ArtBusiness #Antiques #FineArt #CareerInsights #LinkedinCommunity #AuctionIndustry #Grit

One of our business risks is selling products made with materials that are becoming more scarce or which are extremely hard to find - which of course is our USP too💡 Blue John is one of them.... it is only found in one area in the world, Castleton in the Peak District. Due to it's depleting reserves only a small amount is allowed to be mined each year for jewellery 💍 So understandably the price keeps going up - we try and absorb price increases as much as possible but inevitably some is passed on to the customers.😞 We sell it because both Louise Parkin and I love the Peak District (where Castleton is) and spent many days trekking the Derbyshire hills when we were younger (Lou is still lucky enough to have it on her door step)🏔️ It's fair to say it is our hearts rather than our heads which make the decision to keep on selling Blue John!🥰 Yesterday I added a few new pieces onto the website - they all have matching earrings too. These are priced at £99 each and the link is below if you want to look at our full collection ☺️ Do you ever make business decisions with your heart rather than head - and have they worked out? #businessrisk #familybusiness #ecommerce

I miss the good ‘ol’ days (olden times as my son likes to say) when this issue of National Jeweler was published on paper (or stone tablets as my son believes). We used to frame the page we were on and celebrated the day we got added to the Million Dollar“SuperSellers”with a really special frame that we showed off to landlords and vendors alike. Today, we don’t strive to be bigger, only better. Better at the customer experience (both before, during, and after purchase). Better at merchandising. And better at recruiting, hiring, training, and delighting our 700+ associates so they can delight our customers. And for the “better” metric, there’s unfortunately no magazine, paper or otherwise, to see the results. Sure, we have NPS and Yelp, Google and Glass Door. We have reviews and exit surveys. We have repeat purchase percentage and customer satisfaction scores. But truly, none of those (even combined) fully encapsulates what it means to be better. And when I figure out how to measure that, you can bet I’ll endow a new issue of National Jeweler to celebrate it. And hopefully we’ll be on top!
The State of the Majors is here! Dive into our most popular issue featuring the highly-anticipated "$100 Million Supersellers" and "Top 50 Specialty Jewelers" lists. Happy to see my colleague Jill sharing solid advice for someone interested in a jewelry- auction career. I would add three things - and I think she would completely agree with me. 1. Prepare yourself mentally to deal with the excitement of auction day it’s a thrilling, fulfilling, and addictive experience. 2. Build and maintain your relationships. Colleagues, clients, friends, and family. They are your foundation for success. 3. Be empathetic, you’re dealing with people’s lives! Memories, celebrations anniversaries, etc, approach each situation with maturity and sensitivity. It’s not “just”jewelry.
What advice would you give someone interested in a jewelry-auction career? I asked Jill Burgum, executive director of fine jewelry at Heritage Auctions in our latest Behind the Gavel interview. "Invest in yourself, have an inquiring mind, and be ready to work hard. Study, read books, attend lectures, seminars and previews. Handle the jewelry, as one needs to feel it to understand it. Pay your dues. You might know jewelry or gemology, but do you know people or the psychology of the deal? Be a student of life and history. Jewelry, fashion, entertainment and world events overlap and influence one another. A strong foundation and relatability lead to success." **Jewellery Snapshot From An Ex-Jeweller** . Yes, this is how it’s spelled in Australia… . And it’s one of the most unsaturated and underrated niches for marketers. . Did you know the average couple spends between $3,000 and $20,000 on their wedding ring? . It’s a symbol of love and commitment, after all. . Having worked in the space for 4 years, these are some of the most emotional purchases. . There’s no ROI, calculation, or planning involved. . If the feeling, timing, and ring are right, the deal is closed. . Our clients make money, and we make money. Remember, that’s the rule. . Whereas in real estate, the turnaround for settlement is 30-90 days, with longer decision times, more calculations, and extra-legal processes. Boo. . So if it’s so good, why don’t you pursue this niche? . We are still currently serving jewellers strictly in Australia. Our main niche is still real estate. Although it’s more saturated than the jewellery niche, there are simply more real estate agents than jewellers. Handmade jewellers in Australia are also a declining market, meaning they shrink every year. . So, if you know jewellers or a jewellery store outside Australia, this is perfect for you. If not, the video will still serve as an educational strategy for your next Facebook ad and GoHighLevel automation, no matter the niche you’re pursuing. . This video aims to educate and help you build your own version of this snapshot. Some years back I went to newly inaugurated showroom of a very reputed line of jewellers along with my sister. As my sister was scheduled to collect her customised jewellery worth a substantial amount I thought I would look for a small item in gold. When we entered, the sales people instantly recognised my sister and processed her documents however when I asked for smaller budget friendly item, they started passing the buck to one another. Seeing that these sales people were not interested in entertaining my demand I left and did my purchase at another store that I frequently visit. So what was the outcome of this small encounter? The store lost a customer who could have been a loyal customer in the long run The store lost its reputation in my eyes and in all those whom I would tell about the incident This would further lead to decrease in client base This would be manageable for a large firm with a good source of income for sometime, however, smaller businesses would never survive such incidents. So irrespective of how dedicated and hardworking you may be unless your team shares the same zeal they can pull you down. Hence, whatever your position in the society Or what ever job you may be doing your behavior affects the whole organisation. Also, it affects the way people look at you or think about you. Thus one’s demeanor determines how one is percieved by the world. Thus wearing a positive attitude along with a polite and considerate demeanor all the time is most important. #lifelessons #attitudeiseverything https://lnkd.in/dryhbYTh
