Activation with CO2 is quite unusual (normally done with KOH) but apparently very effective according to the paper referenced below. Activating biochar with CO2 increased its surface area from <4m2/g to 375 m2/g* according to this paper: https://lnkd.in/eeUvSB9z Carbon dioxide is a mild oxidizer and really "cleaned up" the biochar, not only increasing porosity and surface area but also enriching the surface with oxygen-containing functional groups!
