Today is Veterans Day, a federal holiday in the US observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans of the US Armed Forces. This day marks the anniversary of the end of World War I when hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. Things to Know about Veterans Day: -It is spelled Veterans Day (without the apostrophe, so NOT Veteran's Day and NOT Veterans' Day). The US Department of Veterans Affairs states that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling, "...because it is not a day that 'belongs' to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans." -Legally, two minutes of silence is recommended to be observed at 2:11pm Eastern Standard Time on Veterans Day. What to say to honor veterans: -Thank you for your service. -Thank you for putting your life on hold to serve our country. -Thank you for the sacrifices you made being away from your family. -Thank you for protecting us. #veteransday #thankyouforyourservice #armistice #1111

Are there US military Veterans in your family? 🇺🇸 The stories that veterans share are not just tales of personal heroism; they are valuable historical accounts that contribute to what made your family as well as to the collective memory of the nation. 🎖️ Sadly, as time advances, these stories are at risk of fading into obscurity, lost with the passing of each cherished veteran.🪦 Today, more than ever, it is crucial for the adult children and grandchildren to take an active role in documenting the experiences of their veteran forebears. 📜 Through oral histories, written accounts, or recorded interviews, you can preserve the unique and irreplaceable memories of service and sacrifice and make up part of your family tapestry. 🎥 In doing so,you create a bridge between past and present, ensuring that the ethos and wisdom of previous generations continue to guide and inspire your family.

Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day: Understanding the Differences Memorial Day and Veterans Day are two important U.S. holidays that honor military personnel, but they serve different purposes and are observed in distinct ways. Memorial Day: Date: Last Monday in May Purpose: Honors and remembers the men and women who have died in military service to the United States. Observance: Often marked by somber ceremonies, laying of wreaths, and placing flowers on graves. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials to pay their respects to fallen soldiers. It’s a time for reflection and remembrance. Veterans Day: Date: November 11 Purpose: Celebrates and honors all military veterans, both living and deceased, who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Observance: Celebrated with parades, ceremonies, and events that thank veterans for their service. Many schools and organizations host programs to recognize the contributions of veterans. While both days honor military service members, Memorial Day is specifically dedicated to those who lost their lives in service, whereas Veterans Day honors all who have served. As Americans, we often celebrate Memorial Day as an extended weekend, please take a moment to honor the fallen members of the U.S. Armed Forces while you enjoy time with your families. Have a blessed weekend!

Thanks and Blessings to all those who have bravely served in our U.S. Armed Forces. We are free because of you! Thank you for your service and sacrifice. Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces (who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable).[1][2] It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are commemorated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I.[3] Major hostilities of World War I formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day at the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations in 1954.[4] Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day commemorates the service of all U.S. veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while in military service.[5] Another military holiday in May, Armed Forces Day, honors those currently serving in the U.S. military. Additionally, Women's Veterans Day is recognized by a growing number of U.S. states that specifically honor women who have served in the U.S. military. Celebrating Veterans Day: The Strength of Humor and Diversity in Our Military Today, we celebrate the United States Marine Corps birthday–Semper Fidelis! And tomorrow, we honor the service and sacrifices of all our military veterans and their families. Military service presents a kaleidoscope of experiences, ranging from intensely challenging to deeply rewarding. One aspect I profoundly miss is the banter – and it's not just about the laughs. The humor we shared was a vital part of our bond, a unique language that encapsulated respect, trust, and an understanding of our varied backgrounds and experiences. To an outsider, the quick-witted, often scathing exchanges might seem harsh. They might even mistake our dark humor, a tool to defuse tension, as insensitive. But this dynamic has an unspoken rule: it's an internal dialogue, a language of camaraderie developed through shared experiences and mutual respect. This banter is more than just jokes; it's a testament to the diverse strengths and perspectives each member brings to the table. In the military, much like in a phalanx, knowing and appreciating the differences in each team member is crucial. Understanding the unique strengths, weaknesses, and viewpoints of those beside you is what fortifies the collective unit. So, as we celebrate, let's remember the strength that comes from this diversity. The different backgrounds, skills, and perspectives of each soldier, combined with the ability to tackle tough conversations with humor and respect, truly strengthens the line. Our military is robust not despite our differences, but because of them. Here's to the humor that binds us and the diverse experiences that make us stronger together. Happy Veterans Day! What is a Veteran? Why is a Veteran? What? A veteran is not someone who is actively serving, but has served in the armed services. Why? Why would someone ever join the military? —— There are so many reasons I have come across for this “why” and asking is an amazing way to engage with veterans. You are likely to find that veterans have so many different reasons for serving in the military. If you ask, be ready to take a peek into the soul of the person you’re talking to. The reasons we join are deep, personal, and have changed the course of our lives. Celebrate veterans Talk to veterans You’ll see the passion and dedication of the people who sacrifice time from their lives to serve.
