In this paper, we consider a simple model of a three-dimensional (3D) coronal arcade. A numerical approach is used to produce a driven normal mode. We find that resonant coupling can occur in 3D, but there are new features that are absent in 2D. In particular, the polarisation of the Alfvén waves can vary with position throughout the Resonant Zone. Moreover, there are an infinite number of possible paths the resonant waves can exist on.

The Iron Cross penetration twin We at Bruker AXS love twining. So, by popular demand, I am posting another one:  the Iron Cross, a common penetration twin in the cubic system where the individual domains seem to pass through each other. Pyrite commonly occurs in the shape of a cube or a pyritohedron crystal. A pyritohedron is an irregular dodecahedron made up of twelve irregular pentagons. Think of a pyritohedron as a cube doing its best to act like a regular dodecahedron. To create an iron cross twin, a pyrite crystal must grow as a penetration twin of two pyritohedron domains related by a rotation along <0 0 1>. A Pyritohedron has {2 1 0} faces that are related by symmetry. For simplicity with the animation below, I used a regular dodecahedron. This simulation shows the formation of a Galaxy in 3 dimensions, starting from an initial nebula. The geometric forces acting on the star dust (galactic matter) originate at the galactic center which spins at a finite angular frequency. To the observant eye, notice how a 3 dimensional nebula condenses to equilibrate into a planar structure with spiral arms - which explains why galaxies are flat, even though they might start as a cloud in 3D space. Moreover, one may realize the importance of the axis of rotation which is preserved through and through. It is this axis that gives rise to the gas jets originating from the galactic cores (geometric center with the axis passing through it). These gas jets are visible if you translate this graphical setting to Python's Matplotlib - because Python has the ability to plot persistent infinities. Java graphics on the other hand cannot plot infinities. Therefore, to visualize the axis one needs to switch to Python.
