SUBMISSION DEADLINE reminder The 2023 Misha Mahowald Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering and the 2023 Mahowald Early Career Award The Misha Mahowald Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering recognizes outstanding research in neuromorphic engineering in a broad sense: neurally-inspired hardware, software, and algorithms; as well as other novel architectures. The Prize is awarded by a jury of international experts chaired by Prof. Terry Sejnowski, and carries a prize of USD 10,000. The Mahowald Early Career Award recognizes outstanding Master's students, PhD doctoral students, or postdocs within one year of PhD degree conferral date. The Award is for an individual (not a group) who has created innovative neuromorphic hardware, software, or an algorithm. The Award is decided by a jury of established mid-career scientists chaired by Prof. André van Schaik, and carries a prize of USD 2,000 together with a guaranteed seat at either the Capo Caccia or the Telluride Workshops for Cognitive Neuromorphic Engineering. The submission deadline for both the Prize and the Award is 23:59 UTC, 31 October 2023. Dr. Rouabah visited Dr. Bernal Neira at Purdue University to explore simulations of quantum chemistry systems on real quantum computers, and quantum solutions for optimizing automated warehouse inventory systems. This fellowship has led to promising advances on several research topics of common interest , including a pre-print on augmenting quantum computers for estimating molecular energies using Bayesian optimization. Thanks to The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine for making this possible. This marks just the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration between CQTech and SECQUOIA. ⌛⏪ Time for a flashback... ...and a sneak peek into the near future 😊 In 2018 I received my BMBF Junior Research Group grant. At the time, the project #QuSecure was one of the first to be funded within the #QuantumFutur initative of the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (VDI Technologiezentrum GmbH). Now we completed the project after more than 5 very successful years 🎉🤗 Needless to say, #QuSecure is very special to me personally, as it enabled me to kick-start an independent research group at Technische Universität Berlin and to pursue ideas at the intersection of the fields of solid-state quantum optics and quantum information! Here a brief summary of #QuSecure in numbers: 👨🔬👩🔬 4 PhD students (+ my group lead position) 🎓 9 Completed Bachelor/Master thesis 🎓 1st PhD thesis defended by Timm Gao in April 2024 🌎 3 International interns: Rafał Smolin (ERASMUS+), Bhavana Panchumarthi, and Aodhan Corrigan (both DAAD Rise) 📰 12 Paper in peer-reviewed journals 🗞 >5 Press releases/News items 💡 1 #QuantumFutur workshop hosting 20 BMBF Junior Research Groups 🏆 1st Place in the "AG Slam 2022" at the physics department of Technische Universität Berlin 🏆 Karl-Scheel Prize 2020 awarded to me by PGzB Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e. V. (DPG) This success would not have been possible without my passionate team (incl. many more names than mentioned above, or shown in the picture taken at NOEKS16 on Fraueninsel) and the many collaborators! 🙏 Also a big thank you to Stephan Reitzenstein, who hosted (and still hosts) my research group providing laboratory space and organizational support! 🙏 However, the completion of #QuSecure is by no means an end, but rather a beginning 🚀 I was able to attract funding via several BMBF joint projects including #tubLANQ.0, #NetiQueT, #QuNET+ICLink as well as the #EinsteinResearchUnitQuantumDevices via Einstein Foundation Berlin. And soon we expect to launch yet another project within QuantERA called "COMPHORT" |😌> Some of you may also have heard about #QuanTour, where we witness a quantum emitter's journey across Europe - an #Outreach and #OpenScience project in the light of the upcoming year #Quantum2025. This is a fun project I am organizing together with Doris Reiter and Dr. Pranoti Kshirsagar and it is made possible by the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e. V. (DPG), the Wilhelm und Else Heraeus Stiftung, and the 12 participating research teams throughout Europe! ⚛+💼=🎉 ⌛⏩ Of course, we have not stopped doing science because of our outreach activities. In fact, we are currently preparing a couple of manuscripts summarizing our latest research on different topics, ranging from quantum light source development, over experiments towards high-dimensional entanglement generation, up to implementations of cryptographic primitives #beyondQKD. I'm really excited about these advances and can't wait to share the results with you! Thank you for taking a moment and stay tuned for updates...😉

📣 Call for Application! 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 (𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞) 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 „𝐂𝐔𝐈: 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫” of Universität Hamburg The Cluster of Excellence will offer scholarships to students who are in the master’s programme or will join the programme in the next semester and give them the opportunity to get to know and get involved in the cluster's outstanding research. We particularly encourage international students to apply. The Cluster explores the dynamics of complex systems, bridging concepts and methodologies for the study of ‘small’ well controlled quantum systems to ever greater length scales and complexity, from large molecules to solid state systems and nano systems. It investigates how new functionalities emerge with the increasing complexity and size of a system and how new functionalities can be generated dynamically. International researchers from different disciplines such as physics, chemistry, and structural biology have joined forces to observe, understand, and control these processes in Hamburg. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 https://lnkd.in/eEtEE8ge Please send your application electronically in a single PDF file to cui.office@unihamburg.de by 15.07.2024. If the application deadline cannot be maintained due to the different international term schedules, it is also possible to submit your application after the deadline (we can consider the application as long as the procedures are not finalized, it might also be necessary to start the scholarship at a later date than 1 October).

Quantum Theory and Living Labs! How does the concept of #livinglabs exemplify the application of a #quantum approach to solving real-life problems? The present study analyses #innovation in living labs inspired by the lens of #quantumtheory and its key concepts, including #superposition, #entanglement, and #wavefunction collapse. ‘Innovation in Living Labs: A Quantum Approach’ applies the quantum approach to the phenomenon of living labs. This allows us to understand the role of joint innovation endeavours by participants taking place parallelly in living labs in a novel and fruitful manner. Using living labs as the context of our study, we elaborate on the key concepts associated with quantum theory applied to investigating #socialphenomena.
