Therapists, I’d like to share a thought-provoking discussion that emerged during clinical supervision today... It’s essential to reflect on the nuances of our supportive stance: At what point does our desire to be helpful transition into enabling behaviors? While offering support is crucial, we must consider when that support might inadvertently shield our clients from facing necessary challenges or uncomfortable truths. Moreover, how do we determine the right moment to gently challenge our clients’ perspectives? It’s vital that we approach these situations with a nonjudgmental attitude, creating a safe space for exploration while also encouraging growth. This balance can be delicate, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of being overly agreeable. We must also ask ourselves: Does our inclination to be supportive stem from our own issues, such as the need for approval, likability or the tendency to fawn? Recognizing these dynamics can help us maintain our professional integrity and ensure that our clients are receiving the genuine guidance they need. Therapists, what are you thoughts? Thanks to innovative thinking by Dr. Charles “Ken” Dunham and Sentara's behavioral health team, we’ve transformed care by reducing overcrowding, cutting costs, and improving outcomes for patients in need. 💡 Key achievements include: ➡️ Reduced hospitalizations among behavioral health patients by 20% ➡️ Decreased length of stay in the emergency department by an average of five hours for behavioral health patients ➡️ Reduced emergency department visits among behavioral health patients by 5% And we’re just getting started! In systemic family therapy, there are times when a client or family hits a wall, or simply doesn’t seem to be making progress. These moments can be tough and may even lead to feelings of self-doubt or an urge to professionally isolate. But it's in these challenging times that we, as therapists, must resist the temptation to withdraw and instead turn toward our support systems. Seeking supervision, consulting with peers, or revisiting our therapeutic approach is crucial. These practices not only prevent professional isolation but also open doors to new insights and strategies that can reignite progress for the families we serve. Setbacks are not failures—they’re moments of learning, for both therapist and client. I've shared that I'm currently in my doctorate program for Healthcare Administration... and I'll explain why. I've been in the behavioral health field for quite a while. Over the years, I have seen some disparaging and frustrating issues that keep our community members from receiving much needed care, for behavioral health, addictions, and medical care. I have a passion for being able to identify as well as work towards finding solutions to existing barriers, as everyone deserves quality care. For those that also work in the behavioral health/medical fields, what you have noticed are the biggest concerns and barriers that our clients and patients experience?
