Physicians Against Red Meat reposted this
👏Massive news!👏 Health orgs representing over a million health professionals call for UK gov to scrap pro-meat ads funded by £millions of publicly regulated money. AHDB has spent £millions targeting pro-red meat and dairy ads at people who are cutting down on meat, pumping out misleading messaging downplaying red meat's environmental impact and implying we need red meat for nutrition. Some choice quotes from the health professionals letter: 👉 "In the UK, 70% of our total food-related emissions come from red meat and dairy production" 👉"Excess consumption of red meat and dairy is leading to 42,000 deaths in the UK annually" 👉"Although meat is a source of protein, zinc, iron and vitamin B12, these nutrients are easily obtained from a well-planned plant-based diet, as recognised by the British Dietetic Association" The organisations include Doctors Association UK, Plant-Based Health Professionals UK, the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change, Eco Medics, BDA Renal Nutrition Specialist Group and many others. Great to see dairy so clearly mentioned too
As with other GHG emission sectors, managing the transition is key.. It has to be fair on all (esp farmers) and well funded.
We must help farmers and associated supply chains transition away from animal products and towards a plant based system, as no animal deserves to be objectified. The future is watching!
Absolutely, the campaign is "misleading and un-evidenced" and needs to be removed. Strip away the million-pound marketing and the horrifying reality of the meat and dairy industries should be plain to see.
👉"Although meat is a source of protein, zinc, iron and vitamin B12, these nutrients are easily obtained from a well-planned plant-based diet, as recognised by the British Dietetic Association" <-- THIS. Just the other day, someone in earnest asked me how I get my protein if I'm vegan. The meat ads are powerful. I'm slightly concerned about the "well-planned" phrasing - it makes it sound like it's hard work to figure out how to get sufficient protein on a plant based diet. But it's really not THAT hard.
This is fantastic news. Tax dollars/Public money/Public-reg money should not be spent on these efforts. Congratulations to all those who have been working to make this happen.
Such great news! One time a parent told me that he bought milk for his children because he thought they needed it to grow healthily. The majority of people in the world are lactose intolerant to some degree, but it is still wildely believed that stealing milk from baby calves is a good way to get nutrition. Go figure.
'Let's eat balanced' (as long as it's either red meat or dairy). You can't make this up 😂
The same should be done with the French Government and Emmanuel Macron still pushing its population to consume meat and diary.
