Beef production is a top driver of the climate crisis, and a recent study says just a small percentage – 12% – of people in the US account for half of all beef consumed in the US. According to the study, men and people between the ages of 50 and 65 were more likely to be in what the researchers dubbed as “disproportionate beef eaters”. Based on a recommended daily 2,200 calorie-diet, these individuals eat more than four ounces – the rough equivalent of more than one hamburger – daily. Climate impacts are anticipated to wipe out 30% of food production by 2050. This is catastrophic for smallholder farmers - but also for everyone who relies on them for food - effectively, all of us. Farmers need urgent support to adapt to climate impacts, but we also need to think differently. We can’t tinker around the edges - we need to provide support that is as comprehensive as the challenges they’re facing. Asif Saleh explains what a holistic solution at scale could look like: https://lnkd.in/eWuT848Q #WEF24

In the Action for Climate education program that I offer, I talk about the top actions that experts have identified individuals can do to have the greatest environmental impact. Eating a more plant-based diet is one of them! By just eating 1/5 less beef, you could cut deforestation by half! That's just 1.5 days/week where you avoid beef. What an incredible impact for such an easy switch! Think you'll try it? Pop a veggie emoji in the comments! If you'd like to learn more about my Action for Climate program, DM me and let's chat! Flooded rice environments play a crucial role in global climate change, accounting for approximately 20% of the total CH4 flux. This underscores the impact of rice production on our environment. Furthermore, the effects of climate change, such as higher temperatures, increased droughts and flooding, and rising sea levels, pose a threat to rice production. Particularly, mega-deltas and coastal zones face the peril of reduced rice production, jeopardizing food security and hindering the progress of consumers and producers striving to emerge from poverty. The interplay between rice production, climate change, and food security is intricate and demands sustainable solutions to mitigate the challenges ahead. Climate change is the long term shift from the normal average weather condition of an area recorded for a long period of time. Say 30 yeqrs and above . This might look long but the impact of climate change in our daily life be it health, food security and most especially agriculture which is very essential in our lives and economy. #savebiodiversity #everylifematters #environmentalconservation

Half the tea and coffee land area will be lost to climate change in our lifetime. Wheat, corn and rice (60% of the world's calories) will also be significantly impacted by climate change. Our ability to grow food is rapidly shrinking. We need to focus on climate as a survival crisis, not just an environmental crisis https://lnkd.in/gUkcCCU5

"GlobeScan’s latest Radar research finds that nearly two-thirds of the global public who feel personally affected by climate change experience it through extreme heat (64 percent). More than half also connect climate change with soaring food prices (59 percent) followed by drought, adverse health impacts and flooding. Food is a major concern for people when thinking of climate impacts: Additional Radar data show that 68 percent worry that climate change will make it more difficult to grow food in the future. These findings highlight the increasing importance of two key themes in climate action today: adapting to the impacts of climate change, such as heat risk, and transforming the food system to ensure better climate resiliency and food security in the coming years."

Please. Let's take off those climate blinkers. We are in ecological collapse, of which climate is ONE of the many symptoms. Soil degradation is another one. And they are intrinsically linked: a healthy soil captures a lot of CO2, a degraded one releases CO2. It's not only soils, of course: extractive land use in general is a major cause of climate disruption. Trees, wetlands, grasslands,... 'wild nature' is not a nice to have: it's a necessity to preserve biodiversity and water cycles and a stable climate. ALL of which are in peril. Planetary boundaries, anyone? Here we see the ABSURDITY of positioning farmers and ecologists in opposition to each other. Which is what the (extreme) right is doing: weaponising the real concerns of farmers for the viability of their farms to oppose the very policies that are needed to ensure we still have farmers in 20 years. And food - for all of us. Not just for a wealthy elite in the Global North. What do you think is going to happen if people have no access to food and water? What would YOU do? Can we think of a better answer to our predicament than slashing down nature conservation regulations and building fortresses to keep migrants out? ...than doubling down on subsidizing extractive industrial food production that destroys our soil - the very soil we depend upon for our very survival? There is another way to navigate this. The 'solutions' are unpalatable for people who are not willing to face reality, and walk the path of #collapseawareness, #collapseacceptance to #collapsepreparedness. AndNowWhat

If you only read one article about our predicament, let it be this one. By 2050, it's estimated 95% of the world's soils will be degraded. “It’s going to be like Mad Max" The climate crisis is a food crisis. And it's coming for all of us. We must urgently start regenerative food production, whilst protecting and restoring 50-65% of all land and sea area. We need healthy soil to survive. https://lnkd.in/dW75GdWh

Great article from Carbon Brief last month – highlighting the effects of climate change on food prices 🌾 As weather events become more volatile, we can expect their effects to be reflected on the prices of our global food systems. Global olive oil production, for example, has taken a massive hit since 2021 due to high temperatures. As a result, prices soared by 50%, on average, in the EU between January 2023 and January 2024 – according to Carbon Brief.
