I had one of the most enriching conversations with our hardware engineer Tanmay Sharma while discussing how prepregs (dielectric material) play a pivotal role in PCB costing. It might sound inconsequential, but prepregs have resin content(on average, at least 35% across all) based on which they're classified as Standard, Medium, and High content. Costing of prepregs and, hence, fabrication costs can skyrocket based on the resin content and the fiber. In layman's terms – prepregs insulate the copper surfaces and the cores. It can also be used as a conductor under certain circumstances. Prepegs are pre-impregnated reinforcing fibers(carbon fiber and fiberglass) with epoxy or thermoset resins (that's where the name prepreg comes from). These, in return, affect PCB parameters like:- · Coefficient of Thermal Expansion · Thermal conductivity · Electrical potency, etc. Hence, a poorly chosen prepreg might end up in a burnt-up PCB Unable to find the desired prepreg in the fabrication stage is a nightmare.
