Achieving regulatory compliance for ethylene oxide emissions is now an important goal of the medical device sterilization industry, and many facilities rely on the exceptional performance of Picarro monitoring systems. Our collaboration with Carus demonstrates that with CARULITE® 500 catalyst and Picarro’s advanced CRDS CEMS, the industry can meet and exceed new regulatory standards. However, any interference bias or higher detection limit, as seen with other technologies like GC or OE-FTIR, would reduce the reported destruction efficiencies of abatement systems. For example, an interference response or detection limit of 20 ppb (compared to <0.25 ppb with Picarro) would show lower destruction efficiencies, negatively impacting regulatory compliance. To illustrate, consider an abatement system with an inlet EtO concentration of 100,000 ppb (100 ppm), which is common among aeration rooms or chamber back vents. For an abatement system claiming a 99.99% DRE, the expected outlet concentration should be 10 ppb or less. Using a Picarro CEMS, the system can accurately measure this low outlet concentration, verifying the DRE and ensuring compliance. Conversely, a CEMS with a detection limit or interference response of 20 ppb (common among OE-FTIR & GC systems) would be unable to detect the actual outlet concentration of <10 ppb, leading to potential non-compliance and over-reporting of emissions. When it comes to regulatory compliance, we are only as good as the performance of our monitoring systems.
