Welcome to National Patient Access Week. As I reflect on my recent ski vacation – which started great but took a turn – I find myself in a waiting game: one more week for the MRI, 2 more weeks for the surgeon. It will be 8 weeks from injury before I know what I’m really facing. It’s a frustrating limbo, uncertain of the extent of my injury, impending pain, and the adjustments I’ll need to make to get through this. It’s a reminder of the uncertainty many face when awaiting crucial medical diagnoses, wondering how their lives may be irrevocably altered. Yes, you can call mine a ‘first world problem’ but it’s a glimpse into the broader challenge the patient who is wondering if they have cancer or a progressive disease is facing. Waiting is more than just inconvenient; it’s emotionally draining. It leaves we patients feeling vulnerable. For more than 25 years I’ve worked with providers and teams to eliminate this uncertainty in patients’ lives and relieve the burden of work for the care team. The two are NOT mutually exclusive. Just look at the remarkable progress of The Christ Hospital Physicians who have reduced wait times for new patients by a staggering 52% in just 6 weeks. We KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS. We’ve done it before. Waiting is bad – it’s disruptive, it erodes patient trust, it hampers growth. For providers, constantly apologizing for delays is far from rewarding. For those who schedule the patients, in whose honor we mark this week, a lack of access is hugely demoralizing – a constant trade-off between helping patients and angering providers. Let’s fix this. Our government is committed to working towards providing top-of-the-line care to every Ontarian and ensuring a plan to reduce wait times for performing necessary clinical procedures. I am thrilled to share that the Ontario government added more than 3500 hospital beds across Ontario to ensure everyone has access to hospital care whenever required. This year, our government reduced the backlog for cervical cancer screening by +90 per cent, also adding 24 more pediatric critical care beds. In addition, about 79 per cent of people are now getting their surgery within the targeted time frame, and we continue to take action to shorten all surgical wait times. Source: Ontario.ca We are working together with partners across the province, taking the next step in expanding the number of community surgical and diagnostic centres, ensuring to connect people to the care they need, when and where they need it.
