I can finally share that we have published my first paper out of the Laboratory of Protein Conformation and Dynamics with Dr. Jennifer C. Lee. We took on the challenge of studying intracellular hydration using the bend-libration of water. We were able to generate hydration maps that beautifully visualize the complexity of intracellular water organization. This approach has the potential for future developments in biomedical research and diagnostics. Age estimation of biological traces is one of the holy grails in forensic investigations. We developed a method for the age estimation of semen stains using fluorescence spectroscopy in conjunction with a stoichiometric ageing model. 💡

Dr. Lars Hubatsch from the Hyman lab at the MPI-CBG - Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, Dresden, Germany is one of our excellent invited speakers at this year's Single Molecule Workshop. At the MPI, he is investigating pattern formation and phase transitions in biological systems. In particular, he studies the internal structure of condensates as well as their assembly dynamics using quantitative imaging and modeling. Our final #FacultyFriday of the year features Christopher Lockhart, Research Assistant Professor in the School of Systems Biology. Lockhart uses computational methods to study biomolecules of medical importance. His work primarily focuses on the use of molecular dynamics to study the thermodynamics of biomolecules, particularly proteins. He frequently employs all-atom molecular dynamics simulations with enhanced sampling algorithms to exhaustively explore the conformational ensembles of target systems and compute their thermodynamic properties of interest. In particular, he has focused on uncovering the mechanisms that govern the interactions between intrinsically disordered Alzheimer’s disease Aβ peptides, lipid bilayers, and ligands. Quantum dots are nanoparticles that hold great promise in biology and medicine due to their unique physical and chemical (primarily optical) properties. There are many ways to synthesize quantum dots, both in the form of self-forming nanoislands on surfaces that can be used as single-photon emitters for information storage in electronic devices, and in the form of colloidal quantum dots for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in living systems. A group led by Dr. Lukas Kapitein at Universiteit Utrecht, the Netherlands, has adapted the motor-PAINT technique to use lattice light-sheet microscopy with ZEISS Lattice Lightsheet 7. Their protocol is published in Single Molecule Analysis. Methods in Molecular Biology, vol. 2694 (2024) and uses the entire volume of T-cells to demonstrate how lattice light-sheet motor-PAINT can be used to map complex three-dimensional microtubule arrays across large volumes. 🚀 Excited to share insights from the recent DEA Club Meeting in Potsdam, Germany, where Dr. Gregory Armstrong from Quantemol UK presented this innovative research! 🧬✨ Dr. Armstrong's talk, "Estimation of Dissociative Electron Attachment Cross Sections for Arbitrary Molecules," delved into innovative methodologies for calculating electron-molecule scattering cross sections. Utilizing the #Quantemol Electron Collisions (QEC: https://lnkd.in/eXhrZw6M), and advanced R-matrix theory, this research provides a deeper understanding of the dissociative electron attachment (DEA) process. The dominant low-energy DEA process, hydrogen loss, is critical in applications such as DNA damage and repair mechanisms.
