#Winterwind2024 in Åre kicked-off today with a presentation by Mihai Chiru talking about rebase.energy's work on ice loss forecasts 🌬 ❄ ⚡ 🟢 The subject covered the challenge of predicting ice formation on wind turbines. This challenge is of great importance, since unpredictable icing events can represent 25% of the yearly imbalance volumes(!) for a balance responsible party. 🟢 Mihai presented the 5-step approach in which rebase.energy has developed an ice-loss forecasting model, using only historical data: 1️⃣ Use machine learning-based forecasting models to predict ice loss 2️⃣ Use the #T19IceLossMethod to create the training set 3️⃣ Develop a model that uses turbine-level weather observations 4️⃣ Develop a model that predicts icing only using historical production data 5️⃣ Develop a model that can be used at park or grid connection level 🟢 The model has been applied to real cases and based on the trial results, it has seen great success in improving signals and adding another layer to the data-driven decision making. Yesterday, I discussed with my daughter the nature of hydrogen and the significance of October 8th as #WorldHydrogenDay. Today, she surprised me with a drawing inspired by our conversation. Out of all the drawings she has shown me over time, this one feels SPECIAL 😉 , as I am passionate about decarbonizing #energy systems and recognize the importance of low carbon hydrogen among others in this endeavor. On World Hydrogen Day, observed on October 8th (10/08, symbolizing hydrogen’s atomic weight of 1.008), we acknowledge the remarkable efforts of all involved in advancing the hydrogen economy.
