Here's an inspiring news story: a Headmaster buys seven 2nd-hand pianos for £16 in total, and places them around the school estate for children to play. The result is that children play them in breaks, entertain each other and try to pick out tunes they know. Student-led arts participation is transformed, for just £16. It's a triumph for two reasons: 1. How to think outside the box as a leader 2. Arts provision isn't just about resources, excellent teaching and timetable space. It's about empowering students to find their own creativity. Give children the space to make music socially, away from the formality of teaching, and we'll better inspire the next generation of musicians. New Post: Match Your Grammy Knowledge Against Last Night’s ‘Jeopardy!’ Contestants - https://lnkd.in/gKt4ZR9H - Jeopardy! contestants are expected to know a little bit about everything. They can be a leading authority on the World Series, but that doesn’t do them a bit of good if the categories before them are Shakespeare, U.S. History and 20th Century Women. Related Fetty Wap Becomes ‘Jeopardy’ Answer 11/10/2015 On Wednesday (Sept. 25), one of the categories was Grammy Winners for Album of the Year. The first sign that the contestants were not music experts was that they steered clear of the category for much of the game. When they finally did go there, they collectively came up with just two correct questions. If you’re a music expert, you would probably have gotten four or five right. (One of them was hard, for reasons we’ll explain.) But then, we’re all music fans here. Give us Ancient Greece as a category and it will be our turn to struggle. Here are the two the contestants collectively got right. Would you have also gotten them? “This Whitney Houston soundtrack won the award in 1994.” The correct question: “What is The Bodyguard?” “The first woman to win the category, Ms. Garland, took the prize for Judy at this New York City venue.” The correct question: “What is Carnegie Hall?” And here are two where no one even ventured a guess. “The first of Taylor Swift’s record four album of the year Grammys was for this album in 2010.” The correct question: “What is Fearless?” “Billy Joel was a ‘Big Shot’ in 1980, winning for this album that bears of the name of a thoroughfare.” The correct question: “What is 52nd Street?” Here’s one where a contestant took a crack at it and missed. “Dreamland by Glass Animals might be the response to this album that made Billie Eilish the category’s youngest winner ever.” The correct question: “What is When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ The convoluted phrasing of this question — The Glass Animals reference was meant to be a clue, but it probably just threw the contestants off — made this a hard one. One of the contestants ventured, ‘What is Sleep?’ Another factor: When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is a long title, and even if you know it, it’s hard to get all those words exactly right – especially under such pressure. (Professional editors have been known to have to double-check it, even all these years later, to make sure they have it right!) Jeopardy! was created by TV legend Merv Griffin, who had a top 10 hit on Billboard’s Best Sellers pop chart in 194

"ACEs science can prevent school shootings; first people have to learn about ACEs science." Jane Stevens, ACEsConnection
🌎This is what we’re talking about! ❤️Imagine such an event happening across the U.S. in conjunction with local Boys & Girls Clubs of America, YMCA of the USA (National Resource Office), and YWCA USA groups so we could be sure local events are community-led and culturally appropriate! This is the kind of thing, Biden for President, that could activate young voters and volunteers. By helping all people become aware of the impact of positive and adverse childhood experiences — how supporting the positive and working to prevent adverse childhood experiences — ACEs — at all levels, especially the systemic ACEs of racism, poverty, cultural oppression, inequity, the wholesale lack of support for young families (as we see as a matter of course with paid family leave, which is offered in EVERY OTHER industrialized nation) we can build a groundswell. Federal $$$ supporting education and grassroots work in cross-sector communities could make all the difference. A public health campaign to raise awareness of the need to bring every sector of each community into this work to prevent and heal ACEs and to promote positive childhood experiences (PCEs) and true community-supported resilience? It would be revitalizing to tell the truth about generational trauma stories in this nation: genocide, land theft, kidnapping, enslavement — and to let truths of collective historical trauma in each community be a firm foundation of creating compassion, empathy, and concern for the wellbeing of one another. Truth for youth, with kids in each community learning their respective history, and perhaps being able to use the tools created by ACEs Matter — the wonderful “family trees” examining adverse and positive childhood experiences across generations — could be a great way to start. Imagine starting this on Juneteenth and having community events culminating w/celebrations of our original land-holders on Indigenous People’s Day, October 14, 2024. Along the way League of Women Voters and others could help youth register to vote, and perhaps engage youth in helping family members register. This idea was prompted by the great work of Jeff Linkenbach and Carla Ritz at The Montana Institute. Perhaps Prevent Child Abuse America and other organizations mentioned herein, with the help of NAMI and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Association for Children of Addiction (NACoA) and CHC: Creating Healthier Communities, would want to help lead such an effort. Corporate and government support working together to activate around truth telling and celebrating youth? Could be a public health engagement campaign that could help prevent isolation and gain support from our forward-thinking Surgeon General, who is definitely concerned about youth suicide and isolation. Maybe we need a new definition of "hit the big time". More than ever it feels like there are two music businesses. There's the one Yard Act are in - who feel like they have made it. Built a decent UK fan base via BBC 6Music (60k followers on Instagram). Playing the Eventim Apollo (5,000+ cap). Signed to Island Records (who paid them an advance). But they have minimal streams (400k listeners on Spotify so perhaps £5k monthly revenue) which all goes to Island to recoup their investment. So if they stopped playing live their income would be tiny. Then there is the one the majority of FRTYFVE artists are in. Built a decent global fan base via TikTok, YouTube & Instagram. They stream really well - the average active artist currently delivers c10m a month so around £50k gross revenue). And it pays every month. Reliably. However, because the fan base is so dispersed though they can't sell tickets at the same level at Yard Act. Some don't play live at all in fact. And none of them are "household" names. None are getting coverage in The Times or playlisting on BBC Radio. But those things don't drive streams. Which has "hit the big time" really? Which outcome do we value more?Reliable revenue or recognition in traditional media and a constant slog to keep the bills paid? #musicbusiness #economics #businessmodels

Advocacy Alert: Testify in support of the City of Yes for Economic Opportunity. On Monday, April 8, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. ET, the City Council Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises will conduct a public hearing on the City of Yes for Economic Opportunity, which proposes changes to city zoning laws aiming to #LegalizeDance. If approved, these reforms would eliminate current dance-related restrictions from zoning regulations for nightlife and entertainment venues. They would ensure more available places for dance businesses to operate, including empty storefronts and neighborhood spaces. 📣 Testify in person, online or by phone, and tell the City Council why social dancing should be accessible to everyone in all NYC venues. 🗣️ Members of the public can testify in-person at City Hall and do not require pre-registration. 📞 To testify virtually via Zoom or by phone, you must register at least 24 hours in advance. ✍🏻 Written testimony can be submitted by no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 11, up to 72 hours after the hearing. Visit bit.ly/DNYCAA04_04 to get all the links you need in order to testify. 📢 #WeAreNYCDance #ArtistsAreNecessaryWorkers #AdvocacyAlert
