On Sunday 1 December, quotas reset for the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Fishery.
The Australian external territory of the Heard Island and McDonald Islands is in the southern Indian Ocean. The islands are among the most remote places on Earth, located about 4,100 kilometres southwest of Perth and 3,850 km southwest of Cape Leeuwin. The islands can be reached only by sea, which from Australia takes about two weeks.
Target species in the fishery include the highly prized Patagonian toothfish. Fishing is controlled by strict rules and regulations including a shared total allowable catch between many countries, regulated by the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. A quota system that limits the amount of fish that boats can take in the fishery, restricts how many boats can fish, and regulates what gear they can use.
Additionally, fishing boats must carry a scientific observer at all times. Observers independently record the catch, effort, and biological information of each fishing trip. They take samples from fish, such as the otoliths or ear bones, and use these to determine the age of the fish caught.
Observers also record the length, weight and sex of each fish caught during a trip and report on the other wildlife that may be seen, the weather conditions, the composition of commercial catch and bycatch.
Exported to United States, Japan, China, and eastern Europe, catch is packed and snap frozen at-sea to guarantee the best quality product for consumers.
