“No. I don’t do that “ At an offsite in Nashville a couple of summers ago, with over 100 Security & Risk leads across various industries, I got to experience something unique. . What may sound counter-intuitive to many, it felt so right to me at that time. Saying NO. If you come across a customer problem that you cannot solve…. perhaps it’s not your expertise... or you probably did not find the problem/ solution repeatable in your target market... or for any other reasonable reason … it is okay to say NO. In fact, it’s better you do it as soon as you realize it. It saves so much time, effort, money, and trust for both you and your prospective customers. As a Product Manager / leader, it is NOT your responsibility to solve ALL your ICPs problems -- but solve that 1 problem for your customer has, really really well. You can even help your customer by suggesting the vendors/partners who you believe can solve their problem. #productleaders , how many times have you said NO to a customer/prospect request for reasons other than engineering bandwidth? Do share your story. #productmanagement #customersuccess #sayingno #corecompetencies #No-vember

How many people would leave their current job to join another company that was paying the same or less money? Not many! Yet this is what many companies are asking the Product Managers that they want to hire to do. Product Managers who are currently making $150k a year and are being approached about the same level of job for $120k-$130k are reluctant to move. $80k-$120k for a Senior Product Manager in Colorado? $125k-$150k for a Principal Product Manager in New York? $160k-$175k for a Director of Product Management in California? These are some of the pay ranges that are being advertised by companies today and I wonder if they have even appraised the market to understand what needs to be offered to not only attract talent but retain these employees. PMs at any level are unlikely to move if the company they are working for is paying them well, providing career growth opportunities and job security. And if a company can't pay competitively, there has to be a significant upside for them to consider a move(exceptional career growth, job security, better alignment on mission/purpose). #hiring #recruitment #productmanagement
