Happy International Women’s Day! This year’s theme is #InspireInclusion. Today we celebrate all women and their accomplishments throughout history. But you may ask, what is the difference between equality and equity? And why is it important for this year’s Inspire Inclusion theme? Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome. Equity acknowledges that people don’t begin life in the same place, and that circumstances can make it more difficult for people to achieve the same goals. Inequity affects many people, but most commonly historically it has affected marginalized communities such as women, people of color, disabled people, the economically disadvantaged, and those from the LGBTQ+ community. The goal of equity is to change systemic and structural barriers that get in the way of people’s ability to thrive. Breaking Barriers: The Rise of #LBTQ+ Women in the Boardroom As we celebrate Pride Month and the second anniversary of the Association of LGBTQ+ Corporate Directors, the Association partnered with Women Business Collaborative to highlight how LBTQ+ women’s representation in corporate America remains a critical frontier. Despite 7.4% of adult Americans identifying as LGBTQ+, only 0.8% of Fortune 500 and 1.2% of NASDAQ board seats are occupied by LGBTQ+ individuals. LBTQ+ women's presence is even lower. Inspirational figures like Beth Ford, Myrna Soto, and Heather Hiles highlight the value LBTQ+ women bring to boardrooms. It's time to bridge the gap through visibility, networking, and allyship. So great that Lenovo was rated highly in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2023-2024 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) for the sixth year in a row, across policies, benefits, culture and CSR for LGBTQ+ employees. One of our most recent initiatives for our employees is in improving visibility and measurement in a range of demographic categories, encouraging self-disclosure of gender, racial and ethnic identities and both visible and invisible disabilities in internal systems. Double standards like this can make it harder for LGBTQ+ women to feel like they can bring their full selves to work.⁠ ⁠ According to our #WomenInTheWorkplace2023 data, 35% of LGBTQ+ women reported feeling the need to hide important aspects of their identity to fit in at work compared to 4% of non-LGBTQ+ women.⁠ ⁠ This matters because women who don’t feel psychologically safe in their workplace are 4x more likely to almost always feel burned out and 3x more likely to think about leaving their companies.⁠ ⁠ Through our #AllyshipAtWork program, employees are taught to acknowledge their privilege and influence in order to effect change. As we celebrate Pride Month, it’s essential to distinguish genuine allyship from mere rainbow washing. The conversation around ‘rainbow-washing’—where companies use Pride symbols without meaningful action—raises important questions about the intersection of commerce and social causes in the workplace. 🏳️🌈 Authentic Allyship: How do we distinguish between allyship and marketing tactics? It’s crucial for organizations to move beyond just changing logos and to actively contributing to LGBTQ+ causes and support their employees. ❌ Symbolic Gestures: Visible support, like rainbow displays, can bring joy and a sense of inclusion. However, we must consider the impact and intentions behind these gestures. Are they contributing to real change or just surface-level? 🤝 Genuine Support: Let’s remember the ongoing struggles of the LGBTQ+ community. True support extends beyond Pride Month and involves continuous efforts to promote equality and fight discrimination. 💼 Corporate Responsibility: Avoiding rainbow washing also means defending LGBTQ+ equality and financially supporting community non-profits. This week is #LesbianVisibilityWeek, a time to celebrate and show solidary with lesbians and all LGBTQ+ women. 💗 It's also a time to draw awareness to the continued experience of bullying, harassment and exclusion faced by lesbian, bisexual and queer women in the workplace. Data from Pride in Diversity's Australian Workplace Equality Index 2022 continues to show that: * LGBTQ+ women are less likely to be ‘out’ in their workplaces than LGBTQ+ men, * LGBTQ+ women have poorer indicators of workplace health and wellbeing than LGBTQ+ men or non-LGBTQ+ women, * LGBTQ+ women are less engaged than LGBTQ+ men or non-LGBTQ+ women, and * LGBTQ+ women are less likely to be working in senior roles than either LGBTQ+ men or non-LGBTQ+ women. Our mission extends far beyond the boundaries of a single month, and we must seek to avoid performative activism and instead cultivate an environment of inclusivity that remains permanent, transforming our workplaces and wider society. OutSpoken Speakers will be launching our charter in March. Our focus is all about creating more visibility and voice for lgbtq+ women, those that are nb and female alies. One big area for us is addressing lgbtq+ panels being male dominated. This week I’ve challenged two panels without women on it. One that was focused on start up funding where women already receive less than 3% of vc funding. We are continuing to build our speaker lists, with amazing business leaders, activists and not for profit experts. This will include AI, finance and tech experts, where we see real inequity in voices. We will also start launching courses to build new voices for the future. And we will be working with some amazing male allies who totally back and support our focus.
