It is increasingly clear that for UK academics – whether early in their careers or moving into senior leadership positions – training in the form of experiential learning and mentorship is highly valued.     As Matthew Flinders observes, “What researchers say they need but are struggling to access – especially those at the beginning of their careers – is researcher development and leadership support that is focused around specific challenges, underpinned by case studies and delivered by people that have actually gone through it themselves” (Research Leadership Matters; Agility, Alignment, Ambition (2022), p. 53).    How can this need for mentorship and guidance be met, given the challenges in capacity for academics at all levels in the UK? Recognising this need underpinned two key features of the Knowledge Broker Academy: 💡 peer-to-peer learning sessions, and 🤝 1:1 meetings with members of UCL Public Policy’s team of knowledge mobilisers.    The pilot KBA cohort unanimously agreed on the significance of collaborative learning, individualised guidance, and peer support in their feedback on the programme.     As Carol Vigurs, Senior Research Fellow at UCL’s EPPI-Centre, explained: “The most valuable aspect of the KBA was to have space to share and discuss some of the challenges of this work and to not feel so alone with it. This is important in raising confidence, recognising the value of this often-hidden invisible labour and confronting the necessary pitfalls that come along the way.”    Academic-policy engagement comes with new challenges and opportunities for learning regardless of prior experience. The KBA programme therefore facilitates researchers and professional services across all career stages and with varied levels of previous engagement with policy.    Nominations for the next cohort of participants in UCL’s Knowledge Broker Academy are open now, with participation to begin in February 2025.
