Menthol tobacco promotions have targeted specific communities for years. The “It’s Not Just” campaign, created with Tobacco Free NYS, works to bring awareness to this unjust practice. A recent study proved the effectiveness of this important effort. https://lnkd.in/gTYfd5rs

Self-injury Awareness Day (SIAD) (also known as Self-Harm Awareness Day) is a grassroots annual global awareness event / campaign on March 1,where on this day, and in the weeks leading up to it and after, some people choose to be more open about their own self-harm, and awareness organizations make special efforts to raise awareness about self-harm and self-injury. The goal of the people who observe SIAD is to break down the common stereotypes surrounding self-harm and to educate medical professionals about the condition. “Keep taking time for yourself until you’re you again” #selfawareness #selfinury #selfrecovery #selfdiscovery #selfawarenessjourney #selfcare #selfcompassion #selfcarematters

#DYK March is #NationalPeanutMonth? On average, Americans eat more than 6 pounds of peanuts a year - but for those who are allergic to peanuts, accidental consumption can have life-threatening consequences. At IgGenix, we're working towards a treatment that can provide safe, rapid protection against accidental exposure, starting with "ACCELERATE-PEANUT", our first in-human #peanutallergy clinical trial this year.

In our research at Telethon Kids Institute, led by Gina Trapp, we audited zones around 64 schools in Perth, collecting data on all outdoor advertisements. We found that 30% of all of these advertisements were for food, and of the food ads, three quarters were for unhealthy food and beverages. When we looked more closely at the alcohol advertisements, we found that schools that had an alcohol outlet within the same audit zone (500m radius from the school) had 30 times more ads for alcohol, than zones that didn't have a liquor outlet. The full paper is accessible here: https://lnkd.in/gthyRSnS Why is this a problem? We know that exposure to alcohol marketing can influence young people’s attitudes towards alcohol, but also their intentions to consume and their actual consumption behaviours. So limiting the exposure of children to alcohol marketing has great benefits. It's a no brainer that when this type of advertising is around schools, kids are likely to see it - sometimes from the school boundary, other times it may be on their way to and from school. What can we do? In addition to helping our kids be savvy media consumers, ultimately we'd like to reduce this exposure to our kids. This requires combined policy, planning and public health approaches. It also requires community activism to help make these changes. Cancer Council Western Australia recently wrote a blog outlining community concerns about alcohol ads in places frequented by children, and calls for the community to provide evidence of concerning ads: https://lnkd.in/gvd9CwXZ

As we observe Ramadan, the management of diabetes becomes a focal point for healthcare professionals and patients alike. The resources provided by Diabetes.org.uk website are invaluable for anyone looking for guidance on balancing their diabetes care with fasting during this holy month. In my practice, discussions around suhoor and iftar meals are crucial. It's not uncommon for patients to indulge in richer, sugary, and oily foods when breaking their fast, which can lead to digestive discomfort and necessitate an increase in PPI prescriptions. This trend highlights the importance of mindful eating and the impact of dietary choices on health, particularly for those managing diabetes. Education plays a pivotal role in ensuring that diabetic patients who wish to fast can do so safely. Tailoring advice on diet and nutrition to accommodate fasting schedules while maintaining blood sugar levels is key. It's about finding the right balance that allows for observance of Ramadan without compromising on health. Let's continue to support and educate our diabetic patients during Ramadan, ensuring they have the resources and knowledge to fast safely, if they choose to and if it's clinically safe for them. Remember, individual consultation with healthcare providers is essential to determine the best approach for diabetes management during fasting. https://lnkd.in/eixDhHCD #DiabetesManagement #Ramadan #HealthEducation #Nutrition #PatientCare

This year, the theme is "Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference" The Focus of 2024: Safeguarding the Youth The tobacco industry has a notorious history of targeting younger populations through strategic marketing and advertising campaigns. Despite global efforts to reduce smoking rates, the industry continuously adapts, using modern platforms like social media to reach and entice children and teenagers . The alarming rise in the use of novel tobacco products such as flavored e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches among youth poses a significant challenge Key Issues and Statistics Youth Smoking Trends: Recent data indicates a concerning trend of tobacco use among young people. Surveys show that children aged 13-15 are still significantly exposed to tobacco and nicotine products (UICC) (World Health Organization (WHO)). Marketing Tactics: The tobacco industry's use of social media influencers, event sponsorships, and other promotional activities has made tobacco products more appealing to the younger demographic (Comprehensive Cancer Information). Health Impacts: Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable illness and death, contributing to millions of deaths worldwide each year. The early initiation of smoking greatly increases the likelihood of developing chronic diseases later in life (UICC). Taking Action World No Tobacco Day 2024 calls for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to protect young people from tobacco industry tactics. Here are some ways we can contribute: Education: Raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and the manipulative tactics of the tobacco industry. Advocacy: Support policies that limit tobacco advertising, especially those aimed at children and adolescents. Support: Encourage tobacco cessation programs and provide resources for those looking to quit smoking. #NoTobaccoDay #CommitToQuit #SmokeFreeFuture #YouthAgainstTobacco #TobaccoFreeGeneration #ProtectOurKids #QuitSmoking #HealthyLiving #AntiTobacco #EndTobaccoMarketing #odiloalexander
