Residents of a village in Ghana recently took to YouTube to thank Pine-Richland High School students and the Rich-Mar Rotary Club for their fundraising efforts. Back in May, members of the Key Club, under the direction of teacher and sponsor Dawn Herbst, helped raise $3,500 through their Walk for Water, an event in which students carried gallon jugs of water for one mile around the Pine-Richland Stadium track. Money raised is being put toward the drilling of a potable water well in Wugladza this month.

On Tuesday, some of our students organized a protest in solidarity with the Palestinian people and urged the college to consider how our actions or lack of action reflect on the UWC mission. Students also expressed a desire for a more open conversation about global issues. Students expressed their grief and despair upon seeing the devastation experienced by civilians, the destruction of medical facilities, and the evolving humanitarian crisis. As a college, we believe in the power of our students and their activism, and we are proud of their engagement with humanitarian issues. With 200 students from over 90 different countries represented here on campus, world events always feel close to home. As we write this, one of our current students, Aya, and a graduate from last year, Dima, has their family in Rafah, desperately seeking to get out. They have both started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to help their family seek safety. Read Aya's story here: https://lnkd.in/d5qDmMsa... Read Dima's story here: https://lnkd.in/dq6bdytY... This week’s events are a reminder of our role as educators to teach about history and its impact on today’s world; to build bridges across cultures, beliefs, and nationalities; and above all, to help solve problems in ways that lead to a more just and peaceful world. 📸Ingeborg Fabra Shutrick #GlobalEducation #UWC #UWCRedCrossNordic #Flekke #IB #GlobalEducation #InternationalEducation #School

🌍 In the face of a decadelong drought and its consequential economic strains, many families in Nyeri, #Kenya, find themselves unable to afford the essential education their children deserve. It's a heartbreaking reality where admission to high school becomes a bittersweet victory, overshadowed by the financial hardships that make it inaccessible to talented young people. 📚 That’s one of the reasons Florida Gulf Coast University College of Education professor Ndiangui, Dr. Peter Ndiang'ui created the Nyeri Diaspora Leadership Academy. Through donations by Southwest Florida non-profits and individuals, more than 30 #Nyeri children have had their school fees paid for in 2023-24. 🍃 I’m thankful I got to talk to Peter about the work he’s doing, and how he's involving Florida Gulf Coast University students from his #Colloquium classes. ✨ But what struck me most about Peter's story is his sense of purpose and gratitude. In his own words, "You say, ‘you have helped all these kids’ but I think I’m helping myself. It’s me. It is something so nice to be on that side, to be able to give." 💗 As we navigate our own professional journeys, let's take a page from Peter's playbook to channel our resources, networks and expertise towards causes that matter. Peter is creating a world where every young #Kenyan has the opportunity to learn. We can do that, too, by supporting the NDLA and causes like it. 🖋 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/eHgUgUb5 #EducationForAll #Leadership #Impact

Behind the headlines and despite catastrophic recent events, life goes on in Haiti. We have been amazed by the courage, innovation and determination of our colleagues at the Andrew Grene High School, and today we share an update, received last week, from it's Principal, Ricot Pierre: "We had 269 students in the beginning of the school year. Some students have left due to the violence. However, despite the current situation in Port-au-Prince, and the fact that it is said everywhere that all schools are closed in the capital, schools in Cité Soleil continue to operate. We currently have a total of 240 students (102 boys and 138 girls) in attendance. Children who live outside the area are accommodated by other families in the area in order to be able to come to school. Several teachers have had to be accommodated by friends or families in less dangerous areas and we are using replacement strategies to teach their students. Many people consider that what Haiti is currently experiencing is more severe than the earthquake of 2010. During this period, to help with the psychological needs of the students, we encourage more sporting activities and try to develop activities with other schools. We had a big sporting and cultural event last Friday with a local school, and before a friendly football match, our children sang and danced with those from the other school. The bakery space was operated by a group of former students preparing products for guests, because there were a lot of people. It seems obvious that the road to hope will be long. More than ever, the school needs you and all the supporters. And together, we will have a great testimony of success. The world looked favourably on Haiti in 2010. Now, let's hope that Haiti is not forgotten. Gratitude and admiration Ricot" #haiti #courage #determination #strength #resilience #hope #highschool #education #partnerships #teachers #charity #internationalcharity #ngo

The Prince Olatunji Olusoji Foundation in recent times have embarked on various programs aimed at ameliorating the condition of the poor and needy in the society. In the past 30-days the foundation embarked on two key programs; 1. Back to school support 2. #10,000 support to 600 Persons (August and September 2024) These programs were quite successful as the foundation directly supported over 4,000. We provided 1,200 individuals with 10,000 naira each and distributed back-to-school packs to children, helping them start the school year with confidence. With 20 million naira invested in our community, we are committed to touching lives, one person at a time. Just as it is said that it is not how far, but how well. #proof #ActsOfKindness #HelpingHumanity

As university solidarity encampments spring up across the nation, I’d like to call attention to the powerful and passionate students who continue to place a collective need ahead of their own, individual work/ school/ personal schedules (especially my friends in Evanston). It’s been difficult to locate research on this topic, but I’ve personally seen over the years that many racial/ social justice protest-goers (especially at universities) are FGLI, non-White, and thus more likely to face racially-influenced police abuse and monetary stress than their often absent White peers (see comments for data examples). 💡 “White people in North America live in a social environment that protects and insulates them from race-based stress” (White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo, 2011). Remaining silent and avoiding stress-inducing situations such as the current encampments are both key indicators of White fragility, and remaining apolitical is a privilege because it demonstrates comfort with the status quo. I encourage you to use your privilege now to support these brave Northwestern University students! Update: The students’ venmo and gofundme are both currently down, so they’re asking you to donate to organizations such as (LinkedIn is removing the links I put here, so see comments)
