Super Bowl Sunday!!!
20 years ago, on this day, we launched what some hail as the most successful advertising campaign of all time... to this day!?!
I don't know about that, but you can't deny that the phrase "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" lives on and on and on. And while you'll see it on T-shirts and signs all over the world with something else filled in, it belongs to Vegas and only Vegas.
Bringing the discipline of Account Planning to R&R Partners and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor's Authority is a highlight of my career.
At the time, Vegas, and all its various stakeholders, had lost the way... was Vegas a family place? A dangerous/seedy place? A place to attend conventions? An Epcot? An entertainment place? A buffet place? A foodie place? A place for paupers to be kings? Or where kings play? Not surprisingly, visitation was hurting with stakeholders in conflict over where to evolve to and how to communicate it. Ads featuring show girls and clinking coins weren't moving the needle.
I didn't know a lot about Vegas at the time, other than that the only non-negotiable in a former co-worker's life were annual visits to Vegas - by herself. So when R&R asked me to work on this brand, I jumped in with my curiosity and invited the team for the ride (thank you for all embracing that!). We dug deep into human history, Vegas' history, explored the hearts and minds of people all over the country (from the passionate advocates to the haters), hung out with people during their adventures on the strip, explored all the human truths that Vegas touched and the emerging trends that might impact the role Vegas would play in the near future.
There are so many amazing stories, but to make is super simple, the deep truth of the matter was one ancient cultures understood and honored... adult human beings need space to release the pressures of navigating lives filled with expectation, judgement, needs to be met, and people to please. In modern day, Vegas was universally understood to be the one place on earth that could consistently provide it. In a world where adults felt very little freedom, Vegas was a playground where adults could be and feel free for a moment. Vegas was Adult Freedom. A place to feel like rockstars, kings and queens, to pamper themselves, to have their imagination sparked, their curiosity peaked, their tastebuds tickled, their hearts danced out... all on their own terms.
In the last handful of years, Vegas has added so much to its repertoire. 21 years ago Vegas couldn't advertise during the Super Bowl. And to start 2024, Vegas is hosting it. What happens in Vegas is now quite visible to the world... and the world clearly wants more of it.
Congrats to R&R Partners and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority - LVCVA! What comes next? ;-)
