On September 27th Netflix will premiere Will & Harper. Yes, this is a Will Farrell movie, but it's not his typical.
It’s about Will’s close friend sharing that he will be transitioning and living as a woman called Harper. This announcement leads to a road trip to see if the country Harper loves, America, will love her back. We get to peer in on this journey and learn about life along with them.
This movie is a CRITICAL watch in any context, but here are the top reasons you should watch it as it relates to the work world:
1️⃣ Many of us feel we are open, our workplaces are inclusive and we are safe spaces for everyone. However, those in the trans community do not always feel included in “inclusivity attempts”. The lives, needs, and experiences of each person, and community in the LGBTQIA+ community, are different. Not all are treated equally in society or sadly, even in the broader LGBTQIA+ community. We can do better. But to do so, we need to understand better.
2️⃣ We need to humanize those in the trans community. People naturally fear what they don’t understand or can’t see. But it’s time everyone attempts to learn about what they don’t understand. I would challenge everyone to have a meaningful conversation with a trans person about their journey, understand their why, and what they had to go through to live as their authentic self. The last thing you would think about leaving that conversation is how the person identifies. But rather be filled with deep compassion and admiration.
3️⃣ To my #HR and #leadership communities, guess what, trans people like to work too! Fear of acceptance in the workplace leads to underemployment within the community. I have met many trans people who have waited until later in life to transition for fear of not being able to earn an income. With some work on our part, we can engage wonderfully talented contributors.
4️⃣ People just trying to live their lives are being killed! The trans community has been politicized and demonized. The fear being sown is leading to deaths. The Human Rights Campaign reported that to date in 2024, 25 people in the US have been killed because they identify as trans. In Massachusetts just last week, a trans teen was almost beaten to death by classmates. We all have to take steps for meaningful change.
🏳️🌈 To my #LGBTQIA+ community and especially my trans friends, please remember you are loved. 💛
