How we turned second-hand finds into sustainable merch ♻️🧣 Recently, we wanted to create some merch for ourselves, but instead of going the traditional route, we decided to make it more meaningful. We found second-hand sweaters that still had a lot of life left in them, and with a bit of creativity, added our Greenie logo to make them truly ours. ✨ This simple project is not something scalable, but it is symbolic to our larger mission: to minimize waste and embrace sustainability in every little step we take. In the end, it turned out to be a lot of fun! We ended up with high-quality, unique pieces that align with our values and feel great to wear. Sometimes, it’s just worth it to be sustainable. 😇 #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Reuse #Ecofriendly #GreenTech

Not every company is going founder mode. Six months ago, Allbirds named retail veteran Joe Vernachio as its new CEO. Now, for the first time in company history, the one-time DTC darling has a professional executive - not an entrepreneur - in charge. That perspective might be just what the company needs. I spoke with Joe about taking the company reins from its founders, his plan to revamp the shoemaker, and why he is tweaking the brand's persona, focusing on nature, over sustainability. He is adamant that he believes in corporate sustainability and reducing our impact on the planet, but he does not seem too interested in preaching about climate change to customers. "Sustainability is very narrowly confined. It makes you feel like you're sorting your garbage," says Vernachio. "It feels like work." As part of this pivot to nature, the company is embracing a marketing strategy of longer-form video. Vernachio envisions 7 to 12 minute episodes, and did not rule out eventually expanding into full-fledged documentaries the way outdoor brands like North Face and Patagonia have. If wool sneaker TV sounds far-fetched, remember that Chick-fil-A is reportedly working on its own streaming service. "When things aren't going so well, pretty much everything's fair game, and you don't get a lot of resistance," Vernachio explains. "Never let a good crisis go to waste." For Inc. Magazine

Crafting strategy and visual assets for brands that feed, nourish, and connect humans. Founder, leader, curator, consultant, speaker, investor.
When was the last time you experienced your company's values in action? I'm noticing that so many companies have a list of values that employees and customers never experience. Would love to hear a few stories of where these core pieces of your brand strategy are showing up in great ways. >>> What is your favorite expression of a company value come to life? We were just part of a great example with #cliffamily as they updated all their packaging to be more sustainable as part of their #BCorp value set. This company really lives its value set throughout the brand experience. #valueofvalues #companyculture

Spent time yesterday talking with Ryan Atkins and Danai O. of Supercycle - and it was really fun. We spent time talking about the real needs of customers who are renting, how to create efficiencies in fulfillment for our model and others, and the massive potential there is in the data we are collecting about clothing. There are some really cool things coming for Rent a Romper this year and I'm excited to connect with people who share our vision and aren't afraid to dig into the details with me. #dataanalytics #sustainablefashion #circulareconomy

Why did Kate and I start Tern Eco? It’s actually not our first business together. Arguably that was the Topshop website - we ran that together for 8 years and had a brilliant time doing so….. It’s not even our second business together – that was our digital consultancy business, ZOKA LTD….. It wasn’t even the idea for our 3rd business together!!! We originally had a different plan… ⚡ We knew we wanted to move into the circular retail space, and being mums ourselves thought that maybe we would launch a secondhand children’s goods marketplace – for buggies and prams and walkers and nursery furniture – and all those other things we buy for our kids and they grow out of in a blink of an eye and then we have to figure out what to do with them. But…… as we looked into it a bit more, as we learnt more about sustainability in the retail world, and as we got more excited about what the future of retail could look like, we saw a bigger opportunity – to help brands and retailers embrace circular retail (trade-in, resale, repairs, refills, rework, recycling) - by giving them the tools and knowledge to launch and run these programmes successfully (and profitably) themselves. – and that’s how the idea for Tern was born! 💡 So today, instead of using our digital experience and knowledge to persuade customers to Buy.More.New.Stuff. 🚫 We use that same knowledge and experience to help retailers build engaging, profitable, circular models - so they don't have to solely rely on selling new stuff to continue to grow - they can make more of what they've already made, through trade-in, resale, repairs or remake. ✂ We help give people responsible, rewarding and easy ways to dispose of things when they’re finished with them 😀 We help the 🌍 by extending the life of products already in existence and reducing the amount of stuff that currently just gets sent to landfill Our mission? To make circular retail something that every retailer can offer and that every customer can expect. And that's why we do what we do..... What's your reason for getting up in the morning?? 🌅 #startuplife #femalefounders #circularretail #sustainabilitymatters Female Founders Rise

Our good friends Avril Tomlin-Hood from boa & Andrew Wanliss-Orlebar from Futerra who incidentally lead a thought-provoking breakout at our WEAR 23 Conference, sat down and chatted recently about the concept of the “brain print” as a critical component of sustainability, alongside the traditional carbon footprint. In this episode, Wanliss-Orlebar speaks to the way that we disregard an investment in sustainability compared to other business investments such as marketing, merchandising, shipping etc., and how the concept of a brain print recognizes not only the literal impact of a sustainability investment (such as in a carbon footprint), but the way we think about a brand as a result of these investments. Give the episode a listen now – https://lnkd.in/g5BU7d3d #CarbonFootprint #BrainPrint #SustainableInvestment
