A few years ago, when I was somewhere in my mid twenties and just taking the first tentative steps into my career, I saw a post that stuck with me for many years.
The post was by Orsted, they were celebrating one of their female engineers who’d recently been promoted. What really stood out was that this particular engineer had been promoted while she was on maternity leave. To me this was the benchmark for a progressive, forward looking and supportive workplace. Knowing that your contribution continues to be valued even when you’re not in the office or actively working on a project. That’s what a great employer looked like to me.
I shared the article with a friend, we both agreed that this would be the dream. To be able to work hard, make our mark and still be valued and progress within our field while growing a family.
Fast forward roughly five years and I’m sat in a playpen with my 8 month old daughter, very much in the depths of my second stint of maternity leave. I absent mindedly check my emails and there in my inbox is confirmation, I’d been promoted to Account Director. I’m not ashamed to admit I let out a little squeak, gave my baby a massive squeeze and did a happy dance.
I’ve been with Camargue for seven years, from senior account executive through to my current position, I’ve seen the business grow and evolve and now as an Employee Owned Trust it’s firmly in the hands of those who make the business great, it’s people.
It often feels rare to find a workplace that sees it’s people as people, not as cogs in a machine. But that’s what I’ve found, that’s who I work with. First and foremost, we all work for each other, we all support, guide, and build each other up. In doing that we ensure we’re the best we can be, so we can provide the best services and advice to our clients.
So what I’m trying to say, other than I really love where I work, is this - the opportunity to nurture doesn’t just belong to those who choose to be parents. Nurturing colleagues and employees, seeing the potential and encouraging excellence should be at the core of every company, regardless of size or structure. Looking around your team, seeing the commitment and the enthusiasm and celebrating it every day is, in my opinion, the best way to create happy and successful team members.
