Losing your home is one of the most stressful experiences a person can have. Memphis has faced a steady increase in eviction rates since before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data also shows that Black and Latinx residents have been disproportionately affected by evictions compared to white residents. 🔐📈 The second strategy in the Community Development plan is to ensure a right to legal representation for renters when they are facing eviction. This year we continued our commitment to work by invitation only, on communities’ chosen goals — an approach with self-determination at its core. Our team worked tirelessly to promote and continue this work, and we are thankful for each and every one of you who has partnered with us. Proven impact: This year, time and again, we saw firsthand how our grassroots approach underpinned by deep listening and trust leads to better outcomes. In 2022-23 we engaged with 106 communities on 170 community development projects. For each community development project, communities define what success looks like. During the year we monitored 202 of these indicators of success together and found they had a median increase of 70 growth points out of 100. 58 of these indicators of success saw a point change of 100! This is real and lasting change in First Nations’ communities. For Elona, a homeowner and a community leader, #HomeEquals empowerment. "As a community leader in Bistekville 4, I believe it was crucial for us to effectively convey to the city government our community's perspective on different issues, particularly regarding our long-awaited access to permanent and decent homes. Our numerous dialogues with the city officials became our platform to be heard. We voiced out our concerns, the city government took them seriously and supported us in the process." The Bistekville 4 community in Quezon City used to be informal settlements, where over a hundred families lived. By partnering with the families and the local government, it became a thriving community. We continue to put the voices and housing needs of low-income families at the forefront of our advocacy and push for inclusive housing policies so that more people like Elona have a safe, decent place to live.
