I’m a C-suite executive at an operator. I care about building a healthy, stable business to maximize value for my stakeholders and investors. I must consider when, how, and why to deploy buy, sell, and/or hold and optimize strategies. To get there, I want to increase visibility into complex operations to control costs and optimize the performance of employees, facilities, and assets. I use metrics as a "vital sign" of the effectiveness and efficiency of my operational efforts, and the financials are the most important KPI – all KPIs lead to the financial statements. Moving OPEX from cost to value-driven performance is crucial because, right now, operational discipline, excellence, and bottom-line growth are king. Most of my OPEX comes from investors and my banking relationships. That’s why protecting my borrowing capacity is critical - my business is heavily leveraged in hard assets, and my liquidity is mainly comprised of a blend of unused borrowing capacity / RBLs through my bank credit facility with a bit of cash and cash equivalents on-hand. My short and long-term capital requirements consist primarily of funding our development and exploration activities, acquisitions, contractual obligations, and debt service payments. My priority is to protect my balance sheet. I am under high levels of scrutiny from regulators and investors. I recognize that I must increase cross-departmental collaboration by reducing friction in the processes and systems between the departments, simultaneously creating networks of excellence and enabling knowledge transfer to max out operational excellence. Still, it seems like the time to make decisions in the industry has significantly shortened in recent years, and our technology processes and systems to allow the company to collaborate fully haven’t caught up to that speed. This dynamic compounds our stress and expenses. A fellow exec feels the same way. He told me that operating in the industry right now is like racing a high-speed boat race, but he is steering the Titanic through the course. Where he used to have months to run proper due diligence and land a buy, sell, or hold and optimize decision, he now has weeks.
