LiveWell Group's roster of family-owned rental communities includes 55+ Active Adult communities. What is "#ActiveAdult?" “Active Adult is a newer niche on the senior housing spectrum, and has been maturing and coming into focus in recent years, but it makes a lot of sense to the ‘55 and better’ low acuity cohort,” says Alexander Ruthman, LiveWell Group CFO, in a recent article published in the Times Union. Ruthman continues, "Today’s active adult communities are designed to empower residents to live life on their own terms. People are living longer, healthier lives, but the conventional housing stock is traditionally meant for families, adds Ruthman, who believes there is a misconception about these residential communities. “These ‘young old’ folks might not want stairs or maintenance any more, but neither need nor want medical support or congregate meals in an institutional setting, along with the associated high cost, and are instead looking for a more middle market ‘lifestyle’ based option,” says Ruthman. “The definition is formalizing; the market is formalizing and the demand for it is increasing as people are recognizing the necessity for it.” Our 55+ Active Adult communities, The Spinney at Pond View and The Spinney at Van Dyke, were featured in an article highlighting what "Active Adult" communities are, and what makes them unique from other rental communities. The Spinneys offer cottage-style living in neighborhood settings and an array of amenities including the award-winning Lifestyle program, #SpinneyLife, which draws inspiration from the International Council on Active Aging. “'What we hear from our residents...is that there is something for everyone,” says Courtney Russell, Lifestyle Program Director for the LiveWell Group. [Lifestyle] Coordinators also partner with residents to flesh out a schedule that includes events that one would typically have to travel for, like summer festivals and concerts. The [Lifestyle] team at The Spinneys also encourages tenants to try something new by offering out-of-the-box activities, like archery and ax throwing. “We positively encourage and recognize and champion each other in the community for trying something new,” says Russell. “They feel so engaged with each other, making friends and getting themselves out the door to try something new.'" As journalist, Shannon Fromma writes, "The reinvention of senior living represents a paradigm shift in how adults 55 and older approach their golden years as that population segment continues to grow. As of March 2024, the youngest baby boomers are turning 60 years old. The number of Americans ages 65 and older is projected to increase from 58 million in 2022 to 82 million in 2050, according to the U.S. Census Bureau." Living in an HMO doesn't mean staying confined to your room! Social space matters, and I'm thrilled to offer my tenants options. When it's dinner time, I want my tenants to have choices as to where they eat and this home has plenty. I think an HMO should offer a sense of community and mealtimes are important!
