🌾 If you build it, they will come. 🌾 This famous line from Field of Dreams reminds me of what we do every day in dementia care. We’re not just building places for people to live; we’re creating spaces full of love, safety, and support for those who struggle with memory loss. In the movie, Ray Kinsella built something special, even when it didn’t make sense to others. In our communities, we do the same—focusing on what makes our residents feel safe and connected. Even when dementia takes away memories, there are still moments of joy, whether it’s hearing a familiar song, seeing a friendly face, or feeling the comfort of a hand to hold. By creating these special places, we give families hope and give residents moments of peace and happiness. Every small interaction counts. Here are some ways caregivers can empower those with dementia to feel more independent: ✨ Encourage Participation: Focus on what they can do, like pulling up pants once they reach knee level. ✨Create a Supportive Environment: Use labels and signs to make the home safe and accessible. Ensure frequently used items are easy to reach. ✨Offer Choices: Let them choose their outfit, breakfast, or activity to boost their confidence and sense of control. ✨Simplify Tasks: Break down activities into simple, manageable steps with clear guidance. ✨Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate their strengths and successes, no matter how small.
