Been reading In the Plex, the story of how Google started and while chapter 1 is a very heavy start, there are some seriously impressive and hilarious parts that highlight just how impressive the engineers actually are and some of the most confounding problems most of us would never have considered, let alone be able to solve. “Google’s synonym system came to understand that a dog was similar to a puppy and that boiling water was hot. But its engineers also discovered that the search engine considered that a hot dog was the same as a boiling puppy.” “This was the hard-won view from inside the Google search engine: a rock is a rock. It’s also a stone, and it could be a boulder. Spell it rokc, and it’s still a rock. But put “little” in front of “rock,” and it’s the capital of Arkansas. Which, is not an “ark.” Unless “Noah” is around.” #InThePlex #GoogleHistory #EngineeringChallenges #SearchEngineInnovation #TechPioneers #ProblemSolving #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #SynonymSystem #HumorInTech #TechReading #BookRecommendations #EngineeringGenius #InnovationStory #GoogleEngineers #Google

Just took a deep dive into Pinterest's recent exploration of adopting HTTP/3 on Medium, and what I found is pretty cool: Pinterest aimed for an awesome user experience by jumping into HTTP/3, solving tricky issues like TCP head-of-line blocking. They carefully tested things, fixed compatibility problems with browsers, and came up with smart solutions for different CDN support levels. The result? Big improvements in video stats, more engaged users, and a clear drop in how long it takes for things to go back and forth. This bold move shows Pinterest is all in for tech innovation, putting them ahead in the fast-changing digital world and we all should always think about optimizing our system no matter how fast we are. explore the journey on https://lnkd.in/dexCjZEW . #TechInsights #HTTP3 #PinterestInnovation

📖 Little story about DocSearch: it's the single most efficient PLG strategy ever made. The pitch was simple; Free search, only one requirement to display a logo. When I joined Algolia, 2 years after it was launched, we had >2000 documentations and it was biggest traffic source to our website. The scraper was coded using Scrappy in python and at some point it became clear that it wasn't scaling anymore. Good thing we had developed internally the Crawler for our biggest customers and it was possible to ingest this load in our managed platform. 🚀 Migrating to the Crawler It took us 6-9 months to migrate: plan, prepare, load test, code and automate everything. The Crawler is a managed robot in which you can write your own extraction code, so we basically rewrote all python logic that powered DocSearch inside a reusable template in javascript. Since we migrated, 2 years ago, the number of blogs and docs using the program has more than doubled 🤩, and the Crawler played a huge part in the success of this initiative. I no longer work there, but forever be proud of what we achieved with a small team. 🤓 Also, if you think you need micro services, low-level languages and fancy tech to handle hundreds of millions of events, know that all of this is orchestrated by a single big NodeJS process. So, if you are looking for a fast and reliable documentation search 👇🏻👇🏻
📢 Calling all developers and tech enthusiasts! Algolia is breaking barriers by making Algolia DocSearch FREE for all doc sites! Previously only available to open-source projects, we’re excited to announce that DocSearch is now open to all technical blogs and projects. Apply today to transform your site’s search functionality and revamp your technical documentation search experience with DocSearch: https://bit.ly/3Si8oNj #docsearch #algoliadocsearch #sitesearch

Global Campaigns Strategist @ Oxfam | Digital Transformation| Top 25 Women in Digital | Climate Justice
"When we talk about stickiness, and having the certain types of tools for moving relationships along and then getting access to parts of the world where people generally don't have access to data, Facebook is leading hands down." Having worked in the digital space for close to 9 years now, I am more and more interested in how people interact with different digital platforms and why they interact with them in that way; for example; why are people now interacting with longer horizontal videos in a platforms like Instagram/TikTok. Is this an algorithmic bias or is it about the content being produced? I find how New_ Public write about different digital norms/changes/movements to be really eye-opening.

Staff Quant/Mixed Methods UXR, heavy on insights > strategy | ex-Google, Mozilla | Advising startups as a hobby
For me, the first step in finding the right job is finding the right fit in terms of mission. This maybe comes from a few years at Mozilla where mission was a word we threw around weekly, or maybe it was these last few years working on Social Impact at Google. In any case, I’ve found the following exercise to be helpful in quickly summarizing the important bits. I don’t believe in burying the lede or forcing you to click another time to get the good stuff, so here it is as a three-sentence fill-in-the-blank. This company (or founder or team) believes the world will be better if __[mission]__. They will help accomplish this goal by __[approach]__. In this role, I will help by __[concrete responsibilities]__. I talk about each of the blanks and how I think about them in the full Medium writeup: https://lnkd.in/gn_JbV6Z
