Black history is more than a month. It’s an every day experience. Don’t focus on the to-do or the check box. We’re not a “to-do” list. Being in South Africa is confirming the need to live and leave a legacy w/o waiting for permission. For those living while Black, protect your peace. For others, stand with us to protect our peace. Here are 5 things to NOT do during BHM: ✊🏻Tokenize Black professionals ≠ equity ✊🏼Dismiss or minimize experiences (BLM) ✊🏽Believe belonging isn’t your responsibility ✊🏾Straddle which side of history you stand on ✊🏿Only celebrate #blackhistory for one month P.S. Did I miss anything on the NOT to-do list? --- P.S.S. Was this a good word? Share ♻️ Content? Click → #doseofdominique Book? bio.dominiquepritchett.com [Picture: Constitutional Hill. Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history marking the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing news of the end of slavery—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth is not just a celebration of freedom but also a reminder of the resilience, strength, and culture of African Americans throughout history. It's a time to reflect on the struggles and sacrifices of those who fought for justice and equality, and to recognize that the journey towards true freedom is ongoing. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us reaffirm our commitment to justice, equality, and solidarity. Let us educate ourselves and others about this important day and its significance. Let us uplift Black voices, support Black communities, and work together towards a future where freedom and equality are a reality for all. Happy Juneteenth! 🎉 Today, we celebrate freedom, honor heritage, and renew our dedication to a more just and inclusive society.

This Black History Month, CNM takes pride in recognizing the rich contributions of African Americans in the Arts. Today, we draw inspiration from Maya Angelou's inspiring words. In the spirit of these profound words, we reflect on the importance of positivity, support, and inspiration for others, especially during challenging times. As it's also #RandomActsOfKindness week, this quote beautifully showcases its theme of spreading kindness, understanding, and joy, also aligning with the spirit of unity and love celebrated during #BlackHistoryMonth. African American writers like Angelou and James Baldwin both have woven tales that transcend boundaries, bridging gaps in our understanding and fostering a deeper appreciation for the human experience. Their words echo the sentiment that love and understanding are essential for lasting peace. Throughout this month and beyond, we invite our community to engage in conversations, share stories, and celebrate the achievements of African Americans. By embracing the richness of diverse voices, we can amplify their stories and strive for a more inclusive and harmonious society. #AfricanAmericansInTheArts #DiversityandInclusion

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. This annual holiday commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Africans and represents the day when news of their freedom reached the state of Texas, the last Confederate state to receive the news. Juneteenth is a critical event in American history as it is a moment of triumph for generations of Africans, past and present. One of our core values at Lavinia Group and K12 Coalition is that “we advance equity in all we do.” Equity is a driving force behind all of our decisions. As we honor this Juneteenth holiday, we aim to amplify Black voices, listen to and learn from people of color, and remain ever vigilant of the work that lies ahead. Let’s take time today to honor the profound struggle for freedom and the ongoing fight for justice that Juneteenth represents. We celebrate the resilience and achievements of African Americans and commit to fostering a future where these values are realized by all. Join us in embracing the lessons of Juneteenth, not just today but every day, as we work together to create a more inclusive and equitable world.

Today’s “African Americans and the Arts” Black History Month spotlight is Natasha Jean-Pierre, senior advisor for the Rasmussen University Ocala campus. Q: Which art form most inspires you? “I am most inspired by literary art. Poetry and short stories are my go-to for inspiration. Words can paint a picture in the mind without brushes, offer travel without physical movement and create rhythm without musical instruments. I am in awe at the emotion and thought literary art can evoke. To genuinely laugh out loud, cry or rejoice through reading is a small but meaningful gift. One of my favorite poems is ‘Weekend Glory’ by Maya Angelou.” Q: What does Black History Month mean to you? “Recently, I have been able to reconcile the conflict I had with only a month dedicated to Black history. Just as our lives are important all year round, we take one day to celebrate our birthdays (some of us celebrate for longer). From this perspective, I can better absorb the celebration during the month of February and pay homage to Mother Africa and her impact across continents. I love seeing the African print come out during Black History Month, along with the connectivity that takes place amongst vast ethnic groups and cultures impacted by the African diaspora. Black History Month is a pause to acknowledge and celebrate the ongoing contributions and legacy of Black people through steady variants of turbulence.” #BlackHistoryMonth #RasPride
