An obvious but difficult truth: parents' screentime habits have a significant impact on their tweens. More parental screentime (presumably even for work) is strongly associated with problematic social media and video game use by their kids. The lead researcher gives some tips for building healthier screen habits: 1. Commit to screen-free meal times and bedtime. The #1 thing you can do to avoid problematic screen use is limit screens at bedtime (for kids and adults). 2. Set tech boundaries and limits. Around 70% of parents do this already. 3. Avoid using screentime as a punishment or reward for behavior. Paradoxically It turns out that doing so is associated with higher problematic screen use.

For families who want to keep their tween children from spending too much time in front of screens, a new study offers illuminating advice: ➡️ Parents, you’ll need to put your phones down first. The study, published this month in the journal Pediatric Research, examined the links between parenting strategies involving digital media and early adolescent screen use. Among the most striking findings: Parental screen use was strongly associated with higher adolescent screen time and problematic social media or video game use. 🎮 Parents should be pleased to know that being present and available to their children, without a phone in their hand, can really make a difference. We agree that the best approach is to have a clear family plan for media use, with understood guidelines and an open line of communication as both parents and children navigate our screen-saturated reality. Pause your scroll and soak in the beginning of a new week. Remember, balance is key when it comes to screen time. As Anna Finis, PsyD, Director of our Child Program, reminds us, "While going completely screen-free may not be feasible, we shouldn't let screens overshadow other meaningful activities.” Regardless of how your day went, take a moment to acknowledge both the victories and the lessons learned. Give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back. If you need to, set your phone aside until tomorrow – Instagram will wait. Interested in learning more about screen dependence? Like millions of other parents, I got caught in the same swirl when our kids were little, and it was hard to figure out which parts were normal kid stuff, or discipline issues, or child temperament, or parental stress overload, or couple’s issues – or something else! I learned that it really helps to have a simple plan you can keep returning to. Obviously, the plan changes depending on the age of the child, so adjust it to your situation, but here are the ten headlines. https://bit.ly/3znSYzJ
