Pioneer Alumni Ambassador David, from China, participated in a Pioneer research concentration focused on designing new drugs. Knowing that having to take medication for hypertension twice a day every day could be a burden, David researched ways to lengthen the effect of drugs in the body so patients with chronic conditions would not have to take them so often. In the video, David explains how conducting his research was a transformational experience for him in two ways. First, he learned that research itself was not as overwhelming as he had thought. David began his Pioneer experience knowing very little about how to conduct research, and he found that he was able both to learn how to do it, and to do it successfully. He now looks forward to participating in other research endeavors. The second learning, which David says really transformed his life, is that failure is not something to be frightened of, but an integral part of research. David’s research paper was based on the painstaking work of designing 25 different analogs of the drug he was working on, trying to find one that best accomplished his purpose. As a result, David says that he is no longer afraid of failure, but understands that is a part of life and a learning experience. #PioneerAcademics #Transformation #Research

In 2023, the total output value of Guangzhou's biomedicine and health care industry will reach 117.8 billion yuan, making it one of the strategic emerging industries focused on development by Guangzhou. In order to gather this industry for efficient development, Guangzhou has created an international biological island, covering an area of about 1.83 square kilometers. It is adjacent to Guangzhou University Town in the south and Pazhou International Convention and Exhibition Center in the north. The main industrial development directions are the creation of new biological drugs, bioenergy, and biotechnology. Research and development in information, genetic engineering, protein engineering, and marine biology currently gathers more than 500 biomedical companies. At the Guangzhou High-Quality Development Conference held in February this year, new energy storage, new energy vehicles, biomedicine, low-altitude economy and other new kinetic energy industries were mentioned many times, highlighting that the authorities attach great importance to biomedicine and will become one of the pillar industries. one. At the same time, the Guangzhou government recently announced support for innovative drug research and development and clinical trials, with the maximum cumulative funding for a single enterprise reaching 100 million yuan. The excellent medical level (67 tertiary hospitals, third in the country) is one of the reasons why Guangzhou attracts people from all over the country to work and live here. Many friends from other places say that Guangzhou is very safe. [Medical Technology] On May 7, the National Health Commission introduced the progress of high-quality development in public hospitals. Efforts have been continuously made to construct a new system, leading new trends, enhancing new efficiency, initiating new driving forces, and fostering a new culture. Among them, Jiangsu Province, as a demonstration city for the reform and high-quality development of existing public hospitals, is promoting the optimization and strengthening of national pilot hospitals. Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital has seized the opportunity as a pilot hospital for high-quality development, strengthened technological innovation, and has seen a significant increase in major projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation in the past two years. To promote "Internet + Nursing Services," many provinces across the country have implemented various degrees of "Internet + Nursing Services." Currently, more than 3,000 medical institutions provide over 60 projects in seven categories of medical nursing services, allowing patients to receive corresponding nursing services at home. Despite the growth of life sciences in Europe, the gap with the United States and China is increasing significantly. This was a key finding in the ‘Attracting Life Science Investments in Europe report - Fourth Edition, 2023’ - an initiative of the BioMed Alliance, EuropaBio and Johnson & Johnson. The report uses 22 indicators for life science investments to assess 22 countries’ strengths, weaknesses and investment profiles. It found that Europe scores well in education, publications, exports and clinical trials - but there are big gaps in public research, availability of private equity and the transfer of specific knowledge into technology. As a result, the revenue generated from life sciences in Europe is much less than in the US. The report also found that Europe’s life science and healthcare sector are fragmented and it is not currently taking advantage of its size potential, unlike China. Europe doesn’t benefit from a single market in healthcare and life sciences as they do in the US - it’s much more complicated and slower - so we need to make it more effective and efficient. https://lnkd.in/dCfJsNFa Peoples Republic of China is making tremendous progress in every field including Research publications and Clinical Trials. At present maximum number of research papers are being published from United States and China and by the Year 2025, it is expected that China will emerge as the world leader in the field of #research and #clinicaltrials . Other countries which are giving too much importance to clinical trials and are performing these studies apart from USA and China include Japan, South Korea and Brazil while India has also made lot of progress. #china #researchopportunity #researchers #clinicalresearch

What do a #globalpublichealth researcher with a focus on #implementationscience and #digitalhealth tools for implementation, and a #pharmacist with a focus on #nanotechnology, drug discovery and drug delivery have in common? Perhaps, not much. At first glance. But these were the hard questions and stimulating discussions the National Academy of Sciences US-Africa Frontiers in #STEM team forced us to ponder at the meeting of 96 lucky international selectees from the US and Africa, which took place in #Morocco, January 2024. Thanks to NASEM and other #transdisciplinary opportunities/ #funders like this that inspire unique #innovation and #collaboration by bringing together/ encouraging truly diverse #science, #scientists and thinkers. As a result of meeting in January, in a follow up competitive “fellow exchange” #grant from the program at NASEM, Professor Calvin Andeve Omolo and I were able to put our thinking caps on with invaluable protected time in both #Kenya (United States International University - Africa) and the US (Stanford University) with our first paper submitted ✅, two drafts along the way ✅, one grant draft ✅, and more ideas than we can count. With sincere thanks to labs that made time/ opened their doors at Stanford that further enriched Prof Omolo’s experience. In sum, truly* “supra-disciplinary” thinking is, will, can (and I argue should) be the way forward for #globalhealth. Big problems, but novel solutions await. Thank you NASEM!
