The German trade fair industry is starting into the new year with strong tailwind. At least 330 trade fairs are planned for 2024 in Germany, of which 180 are leading fairs. According to initial estimates at least 180,000 exhibiting companies and 11.5 million visitors were guests at German exhibition grounds in 2023. This represents an increase of around 40,000 exhibitors and almost four million visitors compared to the figures of the previous year. Following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, international leading trade fairs in Germany particularly have recovered well. Philip Harting, Chair of the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry, AUMA: “Trade fairs bring business to life. In 2023, we were able to celebrate the success of numerous strong trade fairs all across Germany. We met highly targeted and well-prepared professionals who did their homework before coming to show. As a result, we had not only busy and productive days but also meaningful conversations about industry trends and shared projects to develop together. Rethinking MICE Exhibitor Social Media Strategy: Beyond the Same Old Routine Are MICE exhibitors missing the mark when it comes to their pre- and post-event social media communications? It seems that way. Year after year, we see exhibitors recycling the same tired content, and it's time for a change. Before the MICE events, they inundate us with repetitive messages urging us to visit their stands at booths X, Y, Z. After the event, it's more of the same, albeit with slight variations: "It was amazing, fantastic, we met wonderful industry colleagues, and we love working in the MICE industry." Everything is portrayed as incredibly amazing, fantastic, and successful. But here's the issue: this communication lacks substance and purpose on social media. Prior to the event, exhibitors should be answering the question, "Why should you visit our booth?" And after the event, they still don't address the "why" – showcasing their brands, products, services, and current offers. Instead of putting these crucial aspects at the forefront of their social media communication (through text, photos, audio, videos, and presentations), they prefer to share this information with only a handful of participants obligated to set up meetings with exhibitors as hosted buyers. However, a significant portion of these buyers may have no genuine interest in the suppliers they're meeting, while others already know the suppliers and don't necessarily need that booth appointment. This cycle repeats year after year, followed by the usual enthusiastic social media posts from exhibitors. We sincerely hope these posts aren't meant to be taken seriously. Because if they are, it suggests that MICE suppliers still cling to outdated sales strategies that were successful before the internet era but are no longer effective today. It would underscore the current state of MICE sales and, if true, would be a surprising revelation. It's high time for MICE exhibitors to revamp their social media strategies, focusing on the "why" behind their offerings and engaging with a broader audience. Let's move beyond the empty rhetoric and embrace a more effective approach to digital communication in the MICE industry.
