Germany has the richest and most celebrated automotive industry, being Europe's biggest contributor to the automotive world, with Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and Volkswagen continuing to push the boundaries with new technologies and advanced engineering. This article celebrates all the great German cars throughout automotive history. A car ahead of its time - the Porsche 959! This particular example is the Gruppe B prototype. It was originally shown off at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show as a concept for the Group B Rally Championship. However, the Group B era came to an abrupt end in 1986 following the incident at Tour de Corse. Effectively cancelling the series. So Porsche switched focus. The 959 Gruppe B prototype was now the springboard for the 959 road car that we all know today. The road car itself was technological wonder for the time. Sporting a sequential Twin Turbo 2.8L Flat-Six making nearly 450hp, mated to a 6-Speed manual transmission with one gear named Gëlande or "Terrain", as it was originally developed for rallying. The 959 also featured the formidable PSK (Porsche Steuer Kuppling) all-wheel drive system with on-the-fly torque split. All of this on the road was good for a verified 197mph and a 0-60 of 3.7 seconds. Both were good for Guinness World records for a production road car at the time. A lesser known fact though, Porsche actually lost money on every single example they built. Costing twice as much as the debut price at the time. Thus the low production run. A total of 292 customer cars were completed. Though 337 were made in total, including the 37 prototypes and pre-production models. #AHECollection: Ferrari 330 GTS Ferrari introduced their 330 GTC in 1966. The two-seat coupe was an elegant Pininfarina-designed coupe, followed later that same year by the 330 GTS Spyder, providing both closed and open options. The car’s independent rear suspension, light steering, and 300 hp made it an exceedingly refined and capable car on the road. In fact, it has been described as one of the greatest GT cars ever produced by many an automotive luminary. The 330 GTS was more sporting than the 2+2, making it one of the most streetable and liveable Ferraris of the era. One of the only 99 units produced, this car was ordered in a unique colour combination, representing the only one produced with this specification. The association of these two great geniuses gave birth to legendary vehicles. Stopped during the war, this collaboration resumed in the 50s with the 1900 and then the Giulietta. An exceptional base for the quality of its design, it enabled the greatest Italian coachbuilders to demonstrate the breadth of their genius. After a successful SVZ, Zagato presented the Sprint Zagato in 1960, the coachbuilder's response to Bertone's Sprint Spéciale. The Sprint Zagato is much sportier than its competitor. Weighing just 785 kg for around 115 hp, the Sprint Zagato was soon adopted by many drivers, who went from strength to strength, thanks in particular to its top speed of 200 km/h. This model was delivered new on 16/02/1962 Today, the car is in generally good condition. The test drive revealed a pleasant car with good mechanical performance.
