New Generation Covered Conductor Installed in Tasmania ⚡️ TasNetworks has successfully installed lightweight covered conductor in the Neika area to the south of Hobart to increase network resilience and reliability. Amokabel, the Swedish specialist cable producer, is proud to announce that it has cooperated with TasNetworks to provide a full covered conductor solution to an area previously known for vegetation related outages. The installation is the first full scale installation of the new generation of covered conductor in Tasmania and has been completed in an area with significant vegetation. 🌏 The technology consists of conductive wire surrounded by an insulating jacket made of advanced lightweight insulation materials that improves reliability and adds minimal weight. This means that it can be restrung on existing poles to save the DNSP – and therefore the consumer – the cost of replacing or adding infrastructure. It is highly cost effective, in this case approximately one tenth of the cost of undergrounding in the same area. * MAJOR MILESTONE REACHED AT LIMBERG III PUMPED STORAGE PROJECT * Significant progress has been made at the Limberg III pumped storage power plant in Kaprun, Austria, with the successful installation of a 355-tonne rotor – one of the heaviest and most complex components in the project. The rotor, part of machine 1, was carefully lifted and placed into the stator with millimeter-level precision, thanks to the use of a specially aligned ceiling crane. The entire process, which took three hours, left only a 4-5 millimeter gap between the components. Manufactured directly in a 17-meter-high cavern, the rotor took nearly a year to complete, highlighting the precision and complexity involved in its production. This operation was the most challenging lift of the entire project, requiring seamless coordination between the crane driver and instructor, whose expertise ensured the successful lift. Once completed, the Limberg III facility will play a crucial role in supporting the energy transition by providing flexible, high-performance balancing energy to the grid. The power plant’s design allows it to adapt rapidly to fluctuations in energy demand, a key feature for future energy infrastructure. Just like in the 1900s when Chief Engineer William Mulholland and his team built the first L.A. Aqueduct, our engineers today at LADWP continue to think outside the box using innovation and design to operate and manage the century old L.A. Aqueduct System. I'm excited to share my recent appearance on Newzroom Afrika, where I had the opportunity to discuss the latest updates from #NERSA regarding the guidelines for load shedding, including the provision for load shedding up to stage 16. While the thought of stage 16 load shedding may sound daunting, I emphasised that this update doesn't necessarily mean we will reach that stage. However, given the aged coal power station fleet declining trend and the Energy Availability Factor (EAF) averaging 55% last month, it's realistic to anticipate seeing up to stage 8 within the next three years: https://lnkd.in/dTF6UWdZ NERSA publishes guidelines for stage 16 loadshedding This conversation is crucial as it sheds light on the challenges and realities facing South Africa's energy sector.
