Neuroscientist ★ Working to unlock human potential ★ Advancing scientific workforce ★ Writer ★ Storyteller ★ Connector ★ Advocate for Postdocs ★ Eternal Optimist
I fundamentally believe in the power of volunteering within an organization whose mission resonates or interests you. We need more people to be involved in the nonprofits we care about to ensure they are adequately staffed to continue to provide value to their members. As a volunteer, you build your network, hone new skills (including interpersonal communication and teamwork), and have a positive impact on others. This can be especially relevant for graduate students and postdocs looking to diversify their networks and develop new skills in project and people management. You can start with getting involved in your institution's student or postdoc organization or engage with more national bodies like the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA). Thanks Chris Smith, Ph.D. for your insightful "Carpe Careers" post about the benefits of contributing to volunteer organizations! Not only can this help #graduatestudents and #postdocs expand their professional networks and skill sets, but I am also reminded of the great work that our GCC members do to support our trainees and career development leaders. https://lnkd.in/ee7s6mPe #carpecareers #gcc #volunteering #networking

Do you volunteer? Where / Experience: As a child, I was the first to raise a hand and dig in, and as my age increased, so did my involvement. In college, I spearheaded a group that brought students of the same studies together for education and social reasons, And I spent time in the environmental studies department raising awareness of issues that we still deal with today. Value in the community: It boils down to two words – duty and fun. I’ve always believed in the value of offering up my time to help others or to push forward a cause I believe in. When you stay close to home and see what’s happening in your community, you’re opened up to a world of opportunities. To take a child’s hand and lead them forward or to listen to the stories that make up someone’s 80+ years of life, creates connections that are irreplaceable. Skills development: Within the daily grind, life can quickly pass you by, and you move from child to adult in the blink of an eye. Children learn new things every day, but as adults, we’re often too busy to stop, look around, and take in what’s happening through someone else’s eyes. Volunteering forces you to adapt, communicate, and accept that things are happening, and you can be a part of it all. It's about the journey: The world is daunting, but being able to work in a space where you’re passionate is genuinely rewarding. Seeing your efforts result in positive change in other people’s lives gives you hope and purpose. Today our Smile Project volunteering event was cancelled due to the weather. This, alongside the election, has got me thinking about power and communities. I am aware that after a long career in public service my perspective is often skewed by the ‘institutional assumption’ that wellbeing and prosperity are created primarily by the institutions that are there to ‘serve’ our communities. (Cormack, 2002). Even if I think I have tried to create new ways, new thinking and new connections in working with communities I know I, in fact we all, have a long way to go. This paper by Cormac Russell really struck a chord with me today. It explores community development principles from a practice perspective. It helped me bring awareness to my assumptions, biases and the lenses through which we traditionally view neighbourhoods. It has challenged me to think about how we really shift power from ‘outside’ of our friends, neighbours and communities to within them. Partnering with our Smile Project young ambassadors has shifted something in me. It has helped evolve my way of knowing my community. It has shone a light on the capacities, energy, resources that our young people have and the solutions they can build together that will have greater impact and longevity that those us in positions of ‘knowing’ can bring. I am left with the following sentence from the paper ringing loudly in my ears: ‘Therefore, those engaged in ground-up Community Development need to understand that their vocational calling is to foreground the capacities of those they are there to serve and background the bureaucracy of their institutions’ Cormac Russell #shiftingpower #communitybuilding #volunteering #SmileProject Link to the paper below.

How does volunteer work fit in as part of your transition to finding and securing your first or next role in the sustainability sector? This is a topic I talk about and also get lots of questions about from the people I’ve been mentoring on their journey. Seems like making a video is an efficient way to answer the question! ⬇️ I share here about 3 categories of volunteer work and approaching it creatively. Please crowdsource by adding your experience and insights in the comments. Your personal experience and success stories will help others to uncover new approaches to their volunteerism. 🎉🥳 And this makes me so happy...big congrats, four of the people I’ve been mentoring/supporting landed awesome new jobs in the past few weeks!! #sustainability #careers #volunteer #volunteering #climatejobs

Hello LinkedIn community! Happiest weekend to all … Just a note to say that I'm actively seeking volunteer opportunities to make a positive impact in the community! As a passionate professional committed to giving back, I'm eager to contribute my skills and time to meaningful causes. Whether it's mentoring youth, supporting environmental initiatives, or assisting local nonprofits, I'm ready to roll up my sleeves. A few things in my bag of tricks are: Team Leadership: Sometimes I lead cross-functional teams and manage large-scale initiatives, translating well to coordinating volunteer groups and projects. Program Management: Other times, I steer complex programs and that can be applied to organizing and executing volunteer events or long-term community initiatives. Problem-Solving: As a self-proclaimed nerd (I actually just went ahead and embraced the name because my siblings call me that – on the regular), I also can pull off in-depth analyses and identify opportunities for adding value, so if there is a specific challenge, it would be cool to use that skill to meet said challenge. Strategic Planning: For some reason, someone in my professional life gave me the responsibility of executing some strategic initiatives (and it worked!), so that can help an organization develop and implement effective plans for their missions. If you know of any organizations that could use an extra pair of hands (and a sense of humor), DM me! Let's connect and explore how we can work together to create positive change! #VolunteerWork #GivingBack #CommunityService #OpenToOpportunities
