If you think your recruiter can be replaced by #AI or a manager from an entirely different team, you either have a very entry level recruiter, or a not-so-great recruiter. A good recruiter does more than source and screen, which by the way in all the cases I have seen are not yet done effectively by AI. A good recruiter: ➡ Helps you discover what you really need from the role ➡ Guides you in developing an effective recruiting process ➡ Helps you make strategic hiring decisions ➡ Creates and manages an excellent candidate experience ➡ Works with you to define your talent brand ➡ Navigates complex salary negotiations ➡ Balances the needs of multiple stakeholders #Recruiting, when done well is not a transactional function. Challenging the Status Quo in Recruitment: A Journey from AI Implementation to Advocacy for Change In our recruitment practices, my partner and I have encountered a troubling narrative. Talented candidates frequently face rejections—even when meeting all advertised qualifications—with vague reasons that offer little in the way of explanation. The most common response they receive is, "We've received a lot of interest, and we are not moving forward at this time." This pattern led us to scrutinize the effectiveness of the technological solutions we've employed to streamline our hiring processes. Reflecting on my own role in the 2018 implementation of an AI software in talent acquisition, I recall voicing a critical concern: this technology could inadvertently magnify existing biases, as it learns from the historically biased actions of recruiters. Time and extensive feedback from job seekers have only reinforced my initial apprehensions. Our findings suggest that such AI systems may indeed be perpetuating bias, rather than eliminating it, and this is not a status quo we can accept. It’s time for a win-win approach: one that values the individual as much as their credentials. We must begin to market our job openings with the same creativity and strategic insight as a top-tier product launch. We set clear application windows and let AI review video submissions, capturing the behavior and stories that a resume simply can’t convey. By adopting this methodology, we directly address Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. We make hiring decisions based on the type of capability—be it IQ, SQ, EQ—that best fits the organization's needs, now and in the future.
